I'm looking at a 69 firebird, and thinking about buying it . My question is will parts such as front sub frame (any differences),rad core support, front disc brakes, rear axle ,power steering box, and steering column interchange with 69 camaro. ( if you know of others please list):D

I'm pretty sure that stuff will interchange. The camaro and firebird had different fenders, quarters, and tail pans. Only thing I'm not sure about is the rear end. I think pontiacs came w/ something else.

You might want to check on firstgenfirebird.org (best 67-69 firebird site)
or forums.performanceyears.com/forums/ (PY forums- for pontiacs)

I had a '69 Bird with OHC 6 cyl. I installed Camaro disc brakes, but I had change all the steering linkage to Camaro. So the lesson is the parts are similar and can be made to work, but it may not always be a direct fit.

Thanks for the input guys. I just got in from picking it up . Had to trailer it, the drive shaft is outand had not been started in about a year . May be worth putting back together as a bird, rather than parts. It's supposed to be a 400 ram air car. I'll take some pics in a few days and post them and get opinions.

400 ram air car? wow nice find. very rare.

I'm actually a firebird fanatic, I use to own a 69 and 67 firebirds about a year ago. You never see the birds at car shows, although you do see 10+ camaros.

firstgenfirebird.org is the site you need to get on. The people are so nice and helpful. They know those cars inside and out. And btw, the pontiac motor in the first gen birds is crooked (offset to one side, take a look). Don't be alarmed lol. The firebird guys would joke that Pontiac accounted for the driver when designing the car, something the chebby engineer overlooked lol.

m21man, I checked out the site you recomended ,looks like a great resource. Went out this morning to look a little closer and take some pics. The car is mostly complete and actually alot more solid than I thought. Window channels look good, dash and upper cowl are great, frame rails and rockers appear to solid, no rust in the bottom of doors, and the shock towers look new. It will need a passenger front floor pan ,a drivers rear floor pan and a center trunk pan. The Quarters will need a lower rear patch at least and the doors will need skins. I don't think I have the heart to part this one out. So far everything still points to it being a 400 ram air auto a/c car, but I know the drive train is not original.

As for Bucks suggestion about selling it all to buy a 67-----I believe I'll just keep it all and buy a 67 as soon as I find one. (I'm definately a pack rat) :hurray:

It's rough FOR SURE, but imho, it's still a keeper IF you wanna mess w/ it!!

To this day, I have a real problem w/ my air-head Nephew's Dad trashing a '67 400/4-speed 'Bird back then!

He went so far as got SO po'd at it that he physically stomped the hood, top and a bunch of glass outta it!!

Sucker was a fine car, but I figure that he was jealous of me and my car!!

And I didn't find out about it for years until I got ta talking cars w/ my Nephew and I asked him what happened to his Dad's old 'Bird and he said, you mean Dad NEVER told you??

Sad to here about the 67 bird, some people have no self control. I've been doing a few searches for bird parts. They seem to be 30 to 40 percent higher than camaro parts. Anyone have a good source thats less expensive? ;)

If it is a 400 Ram Air car (did you get PHS documentation?) it one rare bird. I would not worry about what Camaro parts will fit it, but what the best source for NOS items that are not available or are total crap, like nose endura, inner fenders, tailpanel, to name a few.

For those who are not familar with PHS, it stands for Pontiac Historic Services. For 1961 through 1980's?? Pontiacs you can get a copy of the original Billing History for the car. It is a copy of a microfiche file and they also send a sheet for decoding the numbers. It will show if it was truly a 400 Ram Air car. Cost is $50. Here's the website. Jim

Frank, in my initial post I did'nt make it very clear. I was looking to use parts of the bird on a camaro. Now it looks like the car may good enough to restore. Did'nt get PHS docs but I will probably apply for them before going any further. Thanks for the heads up on the repop parts.

I think it is a Ram-air car......

yea ram air cars are pretty special. The only surefire way to tell is through PHS. That car looks in great shape. I've seen much worse.

Some of the specific 69 firebird parts can be pretty costly. (seats/interior/front end stuff) Because they're one year only, and there was not alot of firebird made compared to camaros. So the aftermarket demand is less.

Ames performance is one of the best Pontiac specific suppliers, they have alot of first gen firebird parts.
www.amesperf.com

Also earlybirds, located in canada have alot of pontiac specific stuff.
www.early-birds.com

What specific parts do you need?

Also it will be awesome taking the bird to a show, Usually you are ALWAYS the only first gen firebird. I really miss my old firebirds, They're so unique. My buddy is almost done with an almost perfect 69 firebird convertible that he did from the ground up.

Sorry for blabbering on, first gen birds are one of my fav cars.

btw heres my old 69 that i should have never sold, carousel red bird (original color special order paint)

and if you need any help or have any questions just ask. I'll see what I can do.

That's a good looking Firechicken, M21man.

There's two for sale around me if anyone is interested. They both look like decent drivers. A 67 or 68 coupe and a 69 'vert. No idea on price or condition, but I'd be glad to check for someone...

m21man , Thanks for the links. I ordered a catalog from ames performance. I appreciate the offer of help with future questions, I'm sure I'll be contacting you soon. The carosel red car is impressive. I can see why you wish you still had it.
