View Full Version : Laying out and painting stripes/ cowl paint
Gary L Jul 10th, 07, 02:06 PM Should the stencil kit be applied to the car assembled and then paint the cowl and spoiler off the car? To get paint under the spoiler I guess it needs to be off the car. But the cowl if left on the car will let overspray on top of the cowl. Does this look right?

madmax87 Jul 11th, 07, 02:05 PM Thats how they did mine. Striped it all out, then disassembled and painted.

Gary L Jul 11th, 07, 03:37 PM Max, are those color sanding marks going every which way?
madmax87 Jul 11th, 07, 03:47 PM No, what he does is skuffs it up lightly. Supposedly it helps with the drying process. Then he wet sands it later. Comes out like glass. Ya, it's kinda scary looking.
RamAirDave Jul 11th, 07, 08:52 PM We paint cars disassembled, except for the doors and trunklid which are left on the car.
We will put the spoiler on the decklid to make sure that the stripes will line up, but paint it seperately. The cowl panel is pretty straightforward to stripe, actually easier without the stencil. Flat hood is pretty straight forward, but will have to measure out a cowl hood. Front header panel is just matched to the hood, and keep them parallel.

To be honest, I prefer striping a Z without the stencil kit. And on the filler/tulip panel below the rear window, the stencil has "corners" on the rounded part of the stripe. Its not a smooth curve. Next one I stripe, I will "reverse" the stencil in that area, pulling off the area that is supposed to be left on, and use that as a guide to run fine-line tape.
Gary L Jul 11th, 07, 09:42 PM How about the white on the cowl. Is that sufficient. I have never seen on without the panel off.
RamAirDave Jul 11th, 07, 09:51 PM Being an "over-restorer" for the most part, I dont really do much overspray, especially on the body panels.
Might want to look through James' (his S/N doesnt come to mind right now) posts with pics of the Black RS Z Survivor car. I believe that car had the cowl overspray well onto the cowl area.

JohnZ Jul 14th, 07, 07:35 PM In the plant, the spoiler was painted body color separately, off the car, and was installed on the deck lid just prior to the in-line repair booth, where the Z stripes were masked and painted; the spoiler was in place when the deck lid stripes were sprayed, and you can usually see some stripe color overspray under the front edge of the spoiler outboard of the edge of the stripe.
