Unless someone responds, do a search here on the topic. There are many before and after X cars out there. There is more than one identifier. Rear end id alone will not do it but its part of a puzzle. Post what information you have.

Apparently the five leaf vs four leaf rule of thumb is only a hint. According to the experts you could have had SS with 4 or 5 and z28 with 4 or 5 as the springs were selected based on the vehicle weight and the various options that contributed to the weight...

so it is a hint that it may have been an SS if it had five leafs but not anything more than a hint...

anyone?

Give us a hint. What does it say on the tag. What year is it? Can you post a picture of the trim tag? Maybe it will tell us.

If it's the X44 you were asking about in December, it's not an SS or Z. Way, way slight chance could be COPO.

It's probably not anything more that a plain jane camaro.the tag say's 69 12437nor 116418 I think that last number was an 8. x44 d80 tr714.I was just wondering what I could look for on or under the car for hints of mabey it was a ss or z-28

With an X44 code, it cannot be either Z or SS. The X44 code is a base car without Style Trim. The equivalent (no Style Trim) codes are X55 (350) and X66 (396) for an SS car and X77 for a Z.

Now, the only performance models known to use the X44 code, sometimes in combination with the D80 spoilers code, are the COPO cars. But then it would have started as a big block car, and I think yours has an 010 small block in it now.

Where do the heater hoses exit, through the box cover toward the middle of the box, or through the firewall behind the passenger side head? Does the car have a 12-bolt? If so, what is the axle code on the front of the passenger side tube? Is the Muncie original? Does it have a partial VIN that matches the car? Does it have a BB trans crossmember (trans mount hole has an angle on one side when viewed from underneath vs. the oblong/ovaled hole a SB cross has)? Does it have a metal plate welded on the driver side frame rail slightly behind the axle (for dual exhaust)?

I almost forgot the most basic question; is the VIN (on the dash) a V8 VIN (starts with 124)??

So, an X44 D80 could be a base L6 or SB V8 car that poilers were ordered on, or it could be a COPO. You're going to want to come back here with as many numbers and as much info as you can find...

I'll check some more things tomorrow but the hoses come from behind the pass head and the first three numbers of the vin are 124.it was a factory yellow paint (not sure the name)with houndstooth interier.when I bought it I was told it had a 10 bolt detroit locker full posi
