Hey guys, I've got an older 2 1/4 inch dual exhaust system with a crossover and Flowmaster Super 40s that i added last year. No leaks, everythings in pretty good shape, but I've never been completely satisfied with the sound. I want it to sound deeper. It doesn't have to be louder, but could be.... but deeper is what i'm after. Would replacing the entire system with a Flowmaster 2 1/2 inch system help that? I'm not sure where to go with this - how does the pipe diameter affect the sound? It has a nice rumble and is fine on the highway but I've always thought it could sound "tougher". I've got a 400+ hp small block. Thanks

If you are not happy with it take it off. There is little to no difference in the timber of the exhaust going from 2-1/4" to 2-1/2". If you want more noise jump up to a 3" exhaust system. My advise; just keep the old system ready to go back on for when you get tired of the racket.

I've run both 2 1/4" and 2 1/2" systems and there is no difference in sound levels!.....If you can stuff a 3" exhaust system under there and can handle the extra noise and racket, then go for it!.....Perhaps maybe there are better mufflers to upgrade your current system.

You should definately get a deeper sound, because you will be increasing your total exhaust area by almost 1". 2.25" pipe yields a circular area of 3.98"^2 and 2.5" pipe has an area of 4.91"^2. Your flow will be better and you should make more hp too.

I just had 3in put on w/ Flowmaster 40s and its loud! I originaly had Flowmasters with 2 1/2's and holes all in my pipes, I mean there was more holes than pipe! So when I had the new system put in I expected it to be softer due to no holes in my pipes but not the case.
I have to say I like it cause out of the 4 cars Ive had they all had very stock style systems and I wanted to go full muscle car sound this time. Its just if your in to talking while driving 3in w/40's is not for you.

Another way of saying it is :The 2.5" pipe is 23% larger in area than the 2.25" dia. pipe
