It's time for a new air compressor,..my 30 year old hand-down from dad is rusted out and leaking.

I'm not up on the new AC's. My current tank is about a 20 gallon. Is this still a good size for painting a car? It's also used for tools but mainly concerned about spraying a car.

Advice welcome.

Harbor Freight has some nice 80 -120 gallon uprights. Try to go for dual stage cast iron big wheel compressors with a motor that has a capacitor starter. Ingersoll is a good one.

Look at the tools and paint gun you'll using and see what the CFM you'll need to run them. I trhink mine is a 60 gallon with 12CFM@90PSI. It does OK for me....

Check out Tractor Supply Co. for some good deals on the 80G Ingersol Rand compressors they carry.
There has been a ton of compressor threads on here if you do a search you will find many PSI worth of suggestions.

I purchased a Husky 60 gal 7.0 peak hp at Home Depot for $399 and I must say it has handled all of my air needs including a blast cabinet and a pressure blaster.

Decide on which gun design you want to use first. An HVLP gravity feed gun will demand much more air than a conventional suction feed. The 60 gallon Husky unit mentioned above at 12cfm should be the minimun you will need for an HVLP. I have this compressor with the Devilbiss StartingLine guns and I sometimes have to wait for the compressor to catch up. Not a big deal, if you paint infrequently or do your car in pieces.

Stay away from those compressors from the Home stores. You can't get parts from them and they have very little CFM. Eagle makes a very nice compressor.60 gal tank,3cyl,23 amp motor 18.5 CFM and there around
$699.95.

I also have a husky 60gal from home depot, and it pushes everything we need, strong compressor for $399 imo. Husky is a campbell hausfield product and parts are available thru them.

I think these compressors are fine for a home shop - certainly all the average user is ever going to need. Runs all my air tools, my sandblaster cabinet as well as my paint guns, and I even use it to blow out my underground sprinkler lines in the fall.
Most of these units are made by CH and oem'd under different brand names. Mine is a Coleman but probably the same as your Husky. That is why the price is pretty much the same no matter where you go, theres not much margin in the low end units. Too bad they're not anywhere near $399 in Canada, they certainly should be with the value of our dollar...i paid over 6 bills for mine.
