I can't install my shift plate and still be able to shift. I have a 396 car with the motor offset a bit to the passenger side. I have the Muncie 21 trans and installed the Hurst comp plus shifter/handle set. The console is original and mounted in the original holes. I have the correct mount that clamps around the tail of the tranny.

After poking around under the car to see if any adjustment could be made on the shifter, there doesn't seem to be a fix for getting the handle in the right spot to shift all four gears with the shift plate. It seems that it might work if my console was to the passenger side 1/4 or so and toward the dash another 1/4 or so. Should I redrill the console holes in the hump and move it over or other?

What are some remedies to this?

Hurst did not take the offset transmission placement into account on the installation kit for the 67-68 BB cars. You should give Hurst support a call and see what they have to say about it. http://www.hurst-shifters.com/faqs.asp

Unlike the factory "Muncie" shifter that bolts to the crossmember, the aftermarket Hurst shifter bolts to a bracket that bolts directly to the transmission. There is nothing in the Hurst install kit to compensate for the transmission on a BB Camaro being over to the right. This is why your shifter too is far right. I have never seen any Hurst literature that states the 67-68 Camaro shifter & kit won’t fit a BB car but it obviously doesn’t.

If Hurst doesn’t offer you a solution you can use the bracket I gave to GaryL as a template to fabricate a spacer to fit between the shifter and the bracket. The idea is to shim the shifter to the left. A stack of washers and longer bolts would also work but a fabricated spacer would be a better solution. You will have to remove the crossmember and lower the back of the transmission to gain access to install the spacer and the longer bolts. A ¾” spacer should do the trick.

The factory used a unique set of shifter rods to compensate for this. I have heard that the s/b set will work for b/b with a little tweaking. I'd bench shift the tranny to make sure it shifts properly BEFORE you install it in the car.

It is already in the car. That is how the offset was discovered.

If you have all the correct parts it should fit.

The Hurst shifter was designed to fit SB and BB and Hurst sold many of these over the years.

Along with all the correct Hurst parts, You also have to have the correct trans because not all Muncies are the same.

The Muncie shown in the picture is not correct. It has the speedo cable on the DR side. 67-68 Camaro Muncie has the speedo cable on the Pass side.

Hurst does make a spacer for the shifter body and one for the stick but should not be needed for 67-68 Camaro.

My Muncie is for a 67 Camaro and the speedo is on the passenger side. Looking under the car it seems like my bracket looks like the one above. I'll have to match it up with Farm Boy's. If mine isn't a match I may just order the right bracket rather than space the one I have.
