View Full Version : cowl tag
3dkustoms Jul 12th, 07, 11:54 AM Since becomeing a member of this fine site I have learned lots of valuable info. Just one question reguarding the cowl tags. On one of my camaros I need some extensive metal work to the cowl area, I'm trying to make decision rather to replace the entire cowl section or just the damage areas. Is removeing the tag to replace the metal going to be looked down apon, or should i leave that section with the tag and work the bad areas?

On a legitimate restoration, ...it may make sense to replace the entire section, ...than to try and 'piece-meal' the thing together. If it were me, ...I'd try really hard NOT to have to remove the tag and/or section around it (OR more importantly, ...the hidden VINS!!), ...but there's only so much one can do, ...and you may have to.
One thing for sure, ...take LOTS of photos of everything before during and after. Those photos will be worth the time...
...just my 2 cents...
3dkustoms Jul 12th, 07, 01:56 PM Thanks for the advice, most of the damage is on the drivers side close to the tag, more than likely I will have to replace that side, the pass side with hidden vin is fine, It is really discourgeing that the car is damaged there but I guess it could always be worse.

69Camarozz396 Jul 17th, 07, 05:46 AM I would take the time to post pics of the damaged area in the bodyshop forum and get some professional input. I would document your car here as they have a database and would help back up your story to replace a section of firewall especially if your removing your trim tag. Hopefully the tag is still on the car. Phil

Phil, thanks for the info, Any advice is greatly appreciated. As far the car firewall needing the work it does in my opinion to be restored in the quality I think it deserves. I have been working in body shops for over 15 years now and its killing me to have to cut this section out in fear not showing the factory spot welds on cowl and firewall section as they are originaly. I will get some of the pics and link them, What process is involved in geting this car documented and to the database, it is a x22 76b and 714 so I am trying my best to do whatever it takes to make this car as original as possible. Thanks
