I emailed Chevrolet and they are sending me a "Hobby Pack" on 69 Camaros. They also said if I contact a different department that I can order (for a small charge) a build sheet. Are these specific to each car according to vin, or is this just something generic from Chevrolet? Anyone know how much they cost and if they are worth getting? Thanks.

I painfully know its true. Its sad cause these were known to be classics even in the 70s. Why Oh why would they pitch that stuff? If you have a los car you may get lucky finding it under the gas tank.

Dennis, thanks for the link, I never knew that information existed on this site and I thought I have clicked on every link from the main page. Did I miss it somehow, or do you just have to know it's there?

Lucky for me I had that information for 3 out 4 of my Camaros. It used to be a nominal fee of around 20 dollars, and it really helps to validate options and colors. I thought it was only for 69s but I was able to get one for my 68. All of course sold in Canada. It really isn't a build sheet, it is just a summary of the Vin. and options, colors etc.
This is a copy of what you get. I think this is what you are talking about.

It's a bit buried, look under "Features" then "Zone Codes" and the link is on the Zone Code page...

I just called them...I have to say, they were somewhat rude and very short with me. They told me they charge the same fee for looking it up whether they are able to tell you something about it or not...so who would want to spend the $60 dollars to be told, "No, your car was not sold in Canada", not me. I was a bit suprised at their attitudes. They said that unless I have some reason to believe it was a Canadian car not to waste their time or my money on it.

I read the link and a bit confused....

"If the vin number has a letter in the middle it is U.S. built so it is doubtful we would have any info unless it was originally sold in Canada. If the vin has the number 1 it is usually a Canadian built car and we should have info on it. "

I thought all 69's had a N or L as the 6th digit? Am I wrong?

Well that covers more than just 1st gens and if you keep in mind all 1st gens were made in the states this part makes more sense...

"If the vin number has a letter in the middle it is U.S. built so it is doubtful we would have any info unless it was originally sold in Canada."

The red is the clue to understanding the statement...

The ladies on the phone I talked to keep saying "do you have any reason to believe your car was built in Canada?" I knew it wasn't built in Canada, as they were all shipped up there, so they really weren't very familair with the information...of course like you mentioned Dennis, they do deal with a lot more than just first gens.

Gm of Canada only retains the information on Camaros that were SOLD in Canada. As we all know, all of the 1st Gen Camaros were built in Van Nuys or Norwood (none of the 1st Gen cars were built in Canada). Some Chevelles and other GM cars were actually built in Canada , so GM of Canada also has those cars build information.
Both my 69 X55 SS and my 70RS/Z28 were built in Norwood and shipped to Canada. I have the GM of Canada documentation for both cars that shows such items such as:
VIN
Trim Code
Paint Code
Production Plant
Shipping Date
Model Number
Engine
Dealer
And a listing of all options

I called there a few months ago and they sent me a form to fax back to them. Being I live close to the border of Canada I figured to give it a try.
My car was not on file with them so they did not charge. I also believe only Norwood cars were exported to Canada.
