: Anyone have any experiences with Shafiroff crate engines?

I am looking to buy one of their crate motors. It is a 540, 695hp, 665 torque. The turnkey price, with distributor and dynotuned carb is around $10,300. I have researched enough that I a pretty sure this is a good deal, but do they make a quality product? Anyone that can offer any experiences, good or bad, would be very helpful (and help provide a piece of mind before I drop $10k.

Here is the link for the motor:

My friends cousin worked there for a while, had them build a 350 for a Monte Carlo I had. Motor ran great. Never had any issues. I live on Long Island and they have a pretty good reputation.

I was involved in making up a 540 race combo, we spend closer to 12K. BB3 X heads Super comp car. They did a good job, turn key short block and supplied heads complete , cam and roller lifters. No regrets. Lots of little extras. This was mainly due to the availability of the Big M block. No one locally had one except Scott so he did the turn key with in a week , for a few dollars more. plus shipping.

My friend bought the 540 (I recall a 670 HP version) for his 55 chevy. We went to scott shaffi's shop and got a tour. Fortunately shaffi doesn't put the motors together himself, he's got mechanics that do it. The 540 that Adam got runs and sounds real good...no problems and he drives it a lot. Some people around here say the HP #'s are somehow inflated but I don't know for sure. I have some in car videos of us blasting around his neighboorhood in cold weather with no windshield or seatbelts or anything to hold onto for that matter. If I have time later I'll host the video/ post a link for you. The car feels like a low 11-second car (worst case IMO).

Yes, Scotts mechanics do all the work, I dealt with a guy named Mike.

My buddy put one of the 540s in his Nova. He just bought the short block with cam. Used his own heads etc.
He has never had a problem with it. Drives it all over, and it runs low 10's to boot!

I'm going there on wednesday to watch them dyno my new 434 small block that vinny budano is putting together (3 time back to back pro-street drag champ using Shafiroffs 738ci nitrous monster)
anyway today horsepower tv 10:30am EST spike is airing their show that deals with Shafiroff and i think goes to their facility if you want to get a better idea on your search.
:beers:

I read good things about Shafiroff motors. Steven let us know what your numbers look like on your 434 SB.

I've heard good things about Shafiroff...however if it was me, I'd buy this:

Looking at the Shafiroff package, it looks like you need a grand for the carb package, plus 600 for the MSD setup...closer to 11k ?

I have an engine from Vortecpro (the ebay guy), and can tell you it's the best bang for the buck that I could find! The builder is Mark Jones in Colorado- he posts on the Chevelles forums (as mike1231) and knows his onions!!!

Just a thought as an option....

That 502 by Vortecpro does look like the best bang for the buck. Good numbers.

thats cool if you dont want to actually see who what and where your engine is being built. for me and the rest of the locals to the long island area, to have a guy around such as shafiroff build your motor and involves you in each and every step, is priceless compared to a pic on the web and a fabricated numbers sheet. IMHO:yes:

I have been very satisfied so far. I'm still tuning (mostly suspension), and the 3600# car (with driver) has run a best of 10.55 so far. I just got Draglites, and a bunch of suspension upgrades, as well as new 4.10's. I am hoping to shave off another .2.

My only complaint about the engine would be the carb. I went with the 950HP since this is a street car. Since then, I found out that the 950HP only flows 830 CFM, way too small for a 540 spinning at 6800. I need to upgrade to the 1000HP, but I have other things that are more important right now to drop $800 on.

The other thing to be aware of, between the 950HP and the Vic Jr, I had NO vacuum ports. I needed vacuum for the brakes, distributor, and trans, so I had to replace the baseplate on the carb.

To make a long story short, I would recommend Shafiroff to anyone. First rate stuff (for the money).

Yep- I know what you mean...it was a calculated risk me buying my motor on ebay!
Budget was the deciding factor for me- and being in the UK I couldn't be there to to watch it dyno'd...just that there are plenty of his satisfied customers on the Chevelles forums (and me) to vouch for the quality of his work, so I thought it might be worth mentioning as an option for you...and btw, he builds them himself with one other guy (his machinist).
Individually built engines, with dyno sheet for that money?....pretty good deal!

bought a 434 ultra street last year from them, happy enough with that that i have a 540 on e-85 that came of the dyno this morning from them at 828hp. over 800 from 6000 to 7400, can't wait to get it here and plug it in.

I also have same 540 with no complaints. As stated above, the 950 is to
small for the motor. I called Mike at Shafiroff and he recommended using
a 1050 Dominator (approx 25hp gain). Mike said the 950 acts as a restricter on the motor.
