I just got new wheels and tires 17x9.5 5.5BS 275x40x17 and the right rear tire is now touching my 2" exhaust. It may be a good time to upgrade to a 3" exhaust system if it is routed different than the stock system which is tight. I was looking at summits ($224) and magnaflow ($624) 3" system.
Can some one tell me if 3" systems are routed differently and if the Summit or magnaflow kits are any good?
Thanks,
dj

A hammer may solve that problem... :D
You can route a few different ways. Would you consider turndowns immediately after the mufflers, or exit out the side in front of the rear tires? Sounds like you may want to retain the over the axle look.

The rule of thumb that I have seen here and on the 2nd board is if you making 600hp then you need to go 3", if not then 2 1/2 will fit easier and make more torque as PDQ said.
Should you opt to go the 3" route then check out perfromancepeddler.com. They have the Mangaflow 3" system(pt# 15899) for 67-73 Camaros for $477 with free shipping. It is a nice looking system and made entirely from stainless steel...........the pipes are all 409 stainless, the mufflers are made from 430 bright annealed(I know this because my company sold the stainless to a company named CarSounds that manufactures mufflers for Maganflow) for the case and 409 for the tubes and insides. Overall a very nice looking package and very complete with nice band clamps and all of the necessary hangers. The downside is that it did not fit my 1980 Z(should be very close to a 73 which also is a 2nd gen) very well. The distance inbetween the tubes from the X to the mufflers is only 3" so clearance for the drive shaft can be close. I need to cut mine so the ends were slight wider and angled the mufflers outward a little. I also had to shorten the ends of the X pipes about 1 1/2" in order to move the mufflers forward so the tails would clear the rearend axle tubes. I am thinking this system was really designed more for the 1st gen Camaros but a call to Maganflow would maybe clarify that.
Might be easier to stay with the 2 1/2" and put some 3" tips on it for looks?

Ahh the Hammer no toolbox would be complete with out one. I really would like to keep the exhaust going out the back. I will prob use the hammer as a temp fix.:)

The engine is a 350sbc that was in the car when I bought it. It sounds like it has a small cam, but I would guess its putting out between 250-300hp at the motor. I really wanted to upgrade the exhaust now, so I won’t have to worry about it in the future when I finally put some power in it (hopefully 500HP) and this is a great excuse for new exhaust. I’m willing to take a hit in performance now, since I really don’t have very much anyways.

Nice car, how wide are your wheels and is the exhaust system routed differently than stock for 3" to clear?

Thanks for the info I may only need to go with the 2.5” system. That’s a very good price on the system and I do like the looks of the stainless. Looks like your putting down some very goods numbers with that 383.

dj, I'm running Summit's brand of header back 2-1/2" dual exhaust kit ( SUM-680101 ) on my 68 Camaro. It was fairly easy to install and has a great sound on my new GM 350/330hp crate. I am also running 255/45-17 tires on the rear with no exhaust touching issues. I know you have a 69', but Summit's brand appears to be of high quality, for the money, and it came with nice hangers and all of the hardware. Good luck!!
