View Full Version : Question on original tranny stamp

I've been doing some detective work on my car, especially since it's a 68.

I got lucky and made contact this morning with the second owner dating back to around 1974. He bought my car in San Francisco from the original owner. I guess I have two questions.

Does anyone know of any chevy dealerships in the San Francisco area that are still open from back then? I'm thinking if it was sold there I could make contact with the dealership and possibly get an option list on the car. The second owner might still have the original owners name, that I'm waiting on.

My next question is on the tranny. My car has the original BU coded 12 bolt posi still in it. The previous owner from 1974 told me this morning that he kept the Muncie four speed out of the car and it was still in his garage. He had planned on putting it in a 32 Ford he was restoring at the time. I gave him the Camaro vin and he was going to make sure it is a match on the stamp.

My question is: I have already installed a M21 out of a 67 Camaro and I'm wondering if it's worth it to spend the money on the original? Does that Muncie get me any closer to what version of 396 was originally in my car? Are there any additional stamps on the Muncie in regards to the motor?

I may buy it anyway because it was original to the car even if I don't install it right now, but I would like to know if it will help my cause.

Help please.

I would pursue the original Muncie if it is stamped with your VIN. A Muncie will not tell you the HP of your original engine unless it is an M22. Because only a 396/375 or 302 could have ordered an M22. I am not sure if the 1968 M22 had a drain plug or if the input shaft had rings cut into them (1 for M21 and 2 for M20). Ask him these questions next time you talk to him.

How about the 427 question?

If you can get a hold of your original tranny, I would do it in a second. I would take the guts out our your M21 and put that in it. Then sell the 67 tranny.

He put the 427 in it himself and decided he was getting too many tickets so he stuck a small block in it.

I just called and left a message with him that I would like to purchase the Muncie if it matches up with my vin. Also, I asked him if he remembers what Muncie version it was. I believe he did say it still had the bell housing and shifter w/linkage still attached.

Get it all back if you can. Don't worry about changing the internals from the 67 tranny you have now.

'68 M22 had no grooves on the input shaft.

Van has a ton of paperwork from a dealership in that area, think it was a San Jose dealership.

You can run the VIN by him and see if it just happened to come from there.

That would be awesome if he did. I just sent him an email. Thanks.

I struck out on the original Muncie.

The second owner was correct when he said he still had the Muncie he pulled out of my Camaro back in 76 but that Muncie wasn't original. The numbers are:
Casting 3851325
vin L170968
code P03309

It turns out the original owner had pulled the engine/tranny and put in a small block and this Muncie.

This is someone's missing Muncie though. Too bad there wasn't a Lost and Found board for this stuff.

Here is the WORST part: He seems to believe (not certain) that he threw away the sheet that had all the options listed on it (puke) after selling the car. Although, he has a garage full of cabinets of paperwork and old stuff still around. I think I'd pay him to go through his paperwork right now.

There is an orphans forum on the CRG website. That looks like an early (64-65) model year tranny from the main case casting.

Also this website.
