Mike Anderson Oct 27th, 02, 04:37 AM Hi there, I don't need to spend $60 or so, but I would like someone to give me the correct dimensions of the bumble bee stripe on a 67 Camaro. Even the Resto books don't show a clear/consistant placement on their featured cars, thanks, Mike.
John Doyle Oct 29th, 02, 07:54 AM I freehanded mine. Start 13/16ths back from the front of the valance (flush with the edge). The stripe is 4 1/8 wide, front edge to back edge. Using 1/8" tape make a 1/8 stripe then a 1/8 gap on top and bottom, the rest is all stripe. The sides are contoured to the arc of the fender edge. Leave a 2" gap if you have SS or RS letters (centered in the 2"). Then as you get near the bottom, it angles off (see pictures in the article I'm e-mailing you) It's hard to get the tape to lay flat on the hood and fender peaks, but take your time, read the article on how I painted my stripe over the clear coat and then cleared coated the stripe.

rwhite69 Oct 29th, 02, 03:54 PM IMHO, unless the quality of the job doesn't matter much, the stencil kits are WELL WORTH the money..in fact, I think the "bee stripe" kit is like $39...you will easily burn up that much in "mental aggravation equity" as you try in vain to get all those pieces of tape arrow-straight and dimensionally correct... Not very likely to get it all as staight as the stencil company's computer-driven plotter-cutter does. I have used these kits from Stencils and Stripes Unlimited quite a few times and have never, ever regretted the expense. Properly applied, the results are awesome. -Rob

Rob, You're probably right... to tape it freehand was not easy, sometimes it's just worth it to buy the tool or in this case the template.

I used these dimensions on my stripe. I used a caliper to measure the tape layout per the assembly manual, it took about 30 minutes and I like the results. This stripe is the earlier "thinner" BB stripe. The stripe is same width as the RS fender emblems. It looks right.

Winch Nov 1st, 02, 05:31 AM So tell me, what do these stencil kits have that make them better then striping tape? I've never used either one but I thought that's what the stencils pretty much were.

69X11SS Nov 5th, 02, 07:01 AM The main difference between the stencil and the striping tape is the fact that the stencil is cut on a wide roll so that the pieces already have the curves of the body built in (ala no puckers). The tape is great fore custom striping. Believe me the stencil kit for any factory type striping is well worth the money. They lay down fast and are very accurate.

ckaram Nov 5th, 02, 01:41 PM Go with the stencil. If it matters any, it will still be a pain in the ass to lay the stencil just right on the header and fender!
I happened to stop by the shop when they were applying the stencil last year. Glad I did. I helped him line it up so it would be pretty close to perfect.
If I wasn't there, I'm sure they would have bailed out early. Either way effort is involved, but the stencil will make it easier.

Winch Nov 6th, 02, 04:10 AM Sounds like the stencil is intended to be used on an assembled front end. Can it be used it you want to paint the stripe while it's all apart?
Also wanted ask, John you said to leave a 2 inch gap on the fenders if its an SS or RS for the emblem. I'm converting my 68 RS 6 cyl to a 350. There were no emblems at that spot before. What is correct? I would assume a 350 emblem. If that's correct do you leave the gap for it?

John Doyle Nov 7th, 02, 08:17 AM The 2" gap is for a '67, You should double check with a '68 assembly manual or perhaps reference another '68's stripe at a show or cruise night (or post a question here).

Believe it or not GM painted the Bumble Bee stripes on the individual pieces before they were assembled. I've seen the end of stripes down in the flanges where the fendeds and header panel join on original cars. It's a miracle they lined up at all, but I guess after you paint 50,000 of them or so you get good at it.
