I can't remember how the old one fit in the gutter. Can someone please tell me which pic is right at the area where I circled? I think it's the first pic with the lip under the gutter. This is the OER brand like Classic Ind. sells. Anybody else have this kind and do you like it? Thanks

Pic 2 , I like the oer brand just remember to keep stuffing as much into the channel as possible, many people forget and then the gasket won't lay down when the trunk lid is closed, so the trunk lid stays up. graemlins/waving.gif

I used GM weatherstrip, and installed it as in Pic 1. Is that why my deck lid will not lay flush with the body?

I agree that Pic#2 is correct. That lip gets tucked in, and you can see the paint color all around the inner lip after you're done.

On my monitor the pic's are too dark in contrast to tell the difference. Bill's comment about the way pic #2 leaving the inner painted edge showing makes me think they are too dark for others as well. Here they are with the contrast adjusted....

Pic 1 has is stuffed under the lip. Pic 2 has it on top of the lip (so that you cannot see the lip of the trunk opening) The number is above the pic.

Yenkoace and Z11Pacer, are you both saying stuffing the ear of the weatherstrip under the lip on the trunk opening is correct? If so, it looks to me that is like pic 1.

Thanks DJD, As you can see I made the pics brighter.

Now hopefully we can get this staightened out. Like I said I thought pic 1 is right, where the part that I circled is under the lip of gutter. This would make sense if I'm being told to make sure I press it down in the gutter as far as possible. Please explain this again since the pics are brighter now. Thanks

Mine and most I've seen are installed like pic #1. That doesn't make it correct though. Where's Charlie?

DJD -

Thanks for adjusting those pictures.

Everyone else - Actually now I think Pic#1 is correct. It was hard to tell with the dark pictures. You can see the painted lip when the weatherstrip is installed correctly. Sorry if I confused anyone.

I was at Rick's today, and looked at their 69 cut-away display car. The body has not been touched yet, and the ear on the weatherstriping was definately under the lip.

The subframe and cutaway engine are complete. Awsome! Can't say the colors are stock, although they have documentation that the colors are correct for the display. Turquoise A-arms, Yellow subframe chevy orange 350 motor--everything, including the rochester was orange. All the engine cutaways were outlined in white.

That little lip on pic#2 is tucked under the 1/8" edge of the trunk edge. I usually take a wooden paint stick to push it under the lip. That way you dont cut up the rubber. Also glue it in with some black weatherstripping adhesive and between the 2 ends where they mate. When I lay it in the channel I make it overlap about 1", That way it wont be short and it will push the ends together. Also put some black rtv on the ends of the weathersripping where they mate together. I also use masking tape over the ends to hold them together till the glue dries.

Ok, guys I'll do it like pic 1.

When you say to really push it down in the gutter. I'm not sure I understand because you can't push too much or you'll have gap from the top where it goes under lip and the pc. underneath with the curve will make the rubber stand straight up, so I don't think you should push too much into the gutter, right?.

Prostrt,
Thanks for the extra tips but what is rtv? I bought 3M Super w/strip adhesive - black. How should I apply this? I'm thinking a bead near top of outer rim and a bead under inside lip.

This w/strip is pretty tough what else can I do to get it to relax so I won't have the problem of not being able to close the lid right?

Thanks to all of you.

There is also a lighty rolled "hook" at the bottom of the outter edge of the channel. I always get the outter edge all the way down first, then do the inner edge. A spray bottle with soapy water helps with installation.
The reproduction weatherstrip is a LOT stiffer than originals; at least the ones that I have used are. About the only cure that I have found is to shut the lid and leave it for a couple of weeks to allow for the seal to conform.

I just installed mine a few weeks ago. Since I am a natural at making mistakes, I first placed mine in the channel without adhesive like #1. I clamped it in and let it sit for a day or two to let it "adjust" to the new twists and turns. When I was satisfied all was well, I pulled out the first 18 inches and glued it in place. I did this 18 inches at a time and pushed everything in with a popsicle stick. When I reached the ends, i butted them together, cutting the end 1/4 inch longer than needed and glued them together. It seems to fit well and the trunk closes with a little "slam".

The black weatherstrip adhesive is what I was thinking about. Just put a couple strips down the bottom of the channel. Dont put to much or it will squeeze out around the weatherstripping. After it dries shut the trunk and it will conform to the trunk lid. It will be hard to shut at first.

Ok guys I did it. It looks good open, thanks to your help. With it closed my trunk sits up about a 3/16 inch or more. Hopefully that will change soon. Thanks again
