I bought a survivor 70 SS R/S "survivor"....then realized that front nose and right fender had been repaired and repainted YEARS ago.....car still has much of the original laquer(Cranberry Red,but prety Orangey now) that looks just ok...paint appears to have water spots or little random circular imperfections on the surface. I've been trying 3M Perfect It II rubbing compound, on a white waffle shaped foam pad, and while it helps,......I'm thinking I need something more aggresive. Would using 2000 wet be too dangerous to try and if OK then what????????
Any "professionals" care to advise......thanks Chuck/Seattle

2000 is pretty aggressive for that old paint. I would step up one grade of compound with the buffer first. Remember; this is old paint, it won't shine like a fresh job. I would use a finer grit sandpaper as a last resort. With paint that old, 2000 may STILL be too aggressive.

It was explained to me that laquer tends to dye back after time losing its shine alot quicker than todays paints....There is a product I believe not sure if it is stil available I believe its called "ebony shine"..That was just for retoring the shine on laquer...Good luck

It really depends on how much paint is on the car and you almost have to be a mind reader to know. There might be paint that was applied before the paint you see on the car now, so checking for thickness might not work.
2000 grit sandpaper marks can be rubbed by hand. Try a very small area, if you like, and see what you come up with. Fine grit compound will also remove 2000 sanding marks. If you go slow and are careful, maybe this method will work for you.

Toby and others, I bought some 3M Perfect It III (3) and that made a significant difference in paints appearance........Make no mistake this 3o year old paint in places is very poor at best......other areas of my 70 Camaro were repainted but when I'll never know......I still could try some 2000 paper wet, but so far have not.........BUT I can once again say that the 3m Perfect It III with the white Foam pad is definite a good route, then the black pad and Perfect It Glaze..........Chuck Seattle

When using the Perfect It III hand glaze make sure to only do small areas at a time. It will be hard to remove without streaking if you do to large of an area.
