View Full Version : Rear leaf spring (differences)
69Z28X33 Jul 22nd, 07, 01:26 PM I have owned my 69z since 1978. I began to restore it in 2003. The rear axle assy is not original, it has five-leaf springs, #k107 on the diff. and #BW 0408 G1 E on the axle. I understand that 69Z28s had 4-leaf springs.
It is very interesting because if you remove the helper spring which is below the main leaf of the assy it looks like an original 4-leaf spring assy.
I would post pictures but I don't know how too yet.
Any information on this would be appriciated.

Gary L Jul 22nd, 07, 09:36 PM Hi Larry. A Z/28 could have 5 or 4 leaf springs, as SS cars could have had either also. BW is a 4.56 12 bolt Eaton posi rear, also available on a Z/28. 0408 is April 8th. How do you know it is not original? What is the build date on your trim tag? I would bet that a 4.56 rear would be a rare option and may have sat around for a while. You can post pictures using the Showroom area to store pictures then link them to a post.
devpdko Jul 23rd, 07, 11:00 AM I believe the 69z came with either the 4 leaf or 5 leaf ... either one is correct.
69Z28X33 Jul 23rd, 07, 07:53 PM Thanks Gary L.
My build date on trim tag is 2D. The diff. housing has K107. 11-10-07 ?
I hope this picture comes thru.
69Z28X33 Jul 25th, 07, 05:08 PM I wish some one would help me with my question about a 5-leaf spring assy on my 69Z. Could my axle assy be orignal for a 69Z?
Larry
Gary L Jul 25th, 07, 06:36 PM That casting date is November 10, 1967. Not original or the 7 is an 8 or 9. BW is a 68 or 69 code only. Z/28 or SS car could have 4 or 5 leaf springs based on total weight of the car. Those springs appear to be original GM springs. Everything I quoted is available here: http://www.camaros.org/index.shtml
My 02D car has an 0310 diff. What is your VIN? Mine is N613xxx.
69Z28X33 Jul 25th, 07, 07:56 PM My is 9N602xxx

Gary L Jul 25th, 07, 08:36 PM The factory manager probably wanted to show a healthy production in February, which is a few days short of an average month. My VIN is about 10 days past your car. Possibly the line was waiting for BU rear ends.
Billy d. Jul 25th, 07, 10:37 PM i have two 69 Z's with vin 602xxx.they are about 400 cars apart and both lemans blue.if you guys need some dates from my original drivetrain, let me know.i only have the original 12 bolt and tranny on one of these cars.

What's your thoughts on my rear springs. You have 2 with vins close to mine.
If you have pics of them please post.

Gary L Jul 26th, 07, 08:32 AM From a search:
"......... Springs were selected by computer in 69 based on the options specified. Theoretically A Z28 could have 5 leaf springs, and an SS could have 4 leaf. Have seen original Z28's with 5 leafs, but haven't yet seen an SS with 4 leafs."

Billy d. Jul 26th, 07, 10:02 AM i agree with Gary.the springs in the picture look original and could have very well been factory for your car.as far as the pictures that might be a while as im away from my car for about one more week.
