When the TH400 bolted up to big block engine in a Camaro back in 1969, how was it detailed, i.e. colors? I'm assuming that it all Chevy engine Orange, tranny case, pan etc. My TH400 is 100% natural (gray bear metal) and would like to detail it correctly. I have already done my rear which came out great in natural coat and since have learned that it should have been paint all black. So Now I have to redo that!!! I don't want to make the same mistake on the tranny. Any help as always, is appreciated.

Think they were natural aluminum like the muncies. Maybe some chevy orange at the edge of the bellhousing?

Nope; engines were painted at the engine plant. Transmission was mated to engine during assembly of the car; no orange paint at all. Manual trans engines were built with the bell housing; that is why they have paint.

T400s were not painted. There is a photo of one out of a '69 L78 car in a vintage car mag. The code 'CX' was hand-written on the right side near the front. That's it-no other finishing operations.
