I'm beginning a restore project on my 69 Z28. It currently has all original springs (5-leaf rear/coil). When restoring the car, is it highly recommended that the leaf & coil springs be replaced? It's a low-milage car (27k). Thanks!

Welcome to TC Dennis.
A Z/28 with 5 leafs is a rare car. What options do you have?

What I did was have my leafs taken apart and re-arched. Some people have good to say about re-arching. I am happy with the results. It has been over 2 years and no problems. Good spring shops have the measurements to compare. I replaced the fronts with Moog 6308's. Look in my showroom to see how the car sits. It measures close to the factory AIM measurements.

I wouldn't replace the leaf springs ... But you may want to think about having them re-arched. The spring place will return them to factory spec. By doing that the car will have the same original stance and to re-arch the spring, they will be taken apart and inspected. When I did my 5 leaf rear springs, several hair cracks were discovered that I may not have found if the springs were not pulled apart. The re-arching also made a world of difference in the how the rear sits. The front coil springs if worn ... are cheap enough to replace. But I would hold onto the original pair.

Thanks for the reply Gary. You asked about the option on the Z28. It has a vinyl top, tilt wheel, Rally Sport, fold-down back seat, headlamp washers.

That pic of your car when it was red is what convinced Mark (69METALMAN) and I to use those springs in his yellow Z. The ones I pulled out of it measured similar to a BB spring and were painted black which led me to believe they had been replaced. The new 6308s were considerably shorter.

We'll have to wait and see, but we're wanting a similar stance as your car

Dennis, with your car being lower mileage, I would think you are probably okay with using the leafs without re-arching them.

Coming from you that is a real compliment. :) Of course my car should be blue any day. The driveway is sloped about 1" where the car sits.

It rides a little rough as it should. It corners fairly flat (driving like the old man I am). No autocross here.
