Hello all,
Trying to figure out a rough running '69 Camaro SS.
The car is a 350 4-speed. I have the Pertronix II ignition and
flame thrower coil. Have it wired with 12v to coil with key on. Carb is a Holley 650 duel line. Drove the car Saturday afternoon ran great. On the way home stopped and put a couple gallons of Shell 93 gas in the tank. Ran great
from gas station to home. Started the car today. Started up like normal
then once backed out of the garage it just started running rough and getting loaded up and blowing black smoke. Would not idle. Put back in garage
and strong smell of fuel. Pulled all of the plugs and all eight were fouled out.
Put new plugs in and restarted. Seemed to run better than same thing happened again. Pulled plug wire off on number one and inserted plug. Seems to be getting good spark.
The Pertronix unit is 3 months old. and the Holley is a year old.
Anyone have some advice on where to start? Could it be some bad gas?
Or just a Pertronix that is on the fritz? Thanks for any info.

Assuming that the floats are properly adjusted I'm thinking perhaps the Holley carb has clogged air passages in the metering block or a blown power valve!

a gulp of water in the gas has always buggered the floats in my wrecker, that has a budget 600 holley on it...i`ve seen it alot with the stock needle and seat holleys where water (dont know why) will stick the needle open...smack the top of the float adjustment a little with a hammer...(not real hard...just looking to jar it loose) see if that helps...if it does, drain the tank, refill with good gas and some drygas to expell any remaining demons...lol...

Thanks guys,
I did try tapping the carb and it did seem to run better - then went back to running like junk. I'm pulling the carb tomorrow night and going to check it all out. Hopefully this will fix it. I'll let you all know - thanks for the help.

Took the carb apart tonight and cleaned everything out. Put back on, and car is now running great again. Also adjusted the floats.
Thanks for the help.

The Holley carb is very tempermental!....Even the smallest amount of dirt or rust coming from the gas tank and making it's way through the fuel filter will enter the passages in the metering blocks, clogging them up, resulting in a overly rich fuel mixture!
