Quick question, on my 69 Z I purchased a set of Afco Multi leafs, the problem is that when everything is mounted and the loaded with the weight of the car the rear spring eyelet is against the frame, what does this mean and how do I fix it? the shackle isnt moving at all when you push down on the rear of the car, I am drag racing this car and help but to think this is a problem because I cant see how the rear suspension can be working properly. Please advise!! thanks!

Either the shackles are too short, or the springs are too long. The shackles should ideally be perpendicular to the spring at ride height. I would measure the free length and arch and compare to others.

With the spring eye on the frame, the suspension is completely bound up and unable to function.

I wonder if they sent you the wrong springs?

On The Rear Shackle When Car Is Loaded On All Four Tires In A Stationary Position How Much Clearance Should There Be Between The Spring Eye And The Frame? When The Car Is Launched The Spring Pull Up Or Down (away Or Toward The Frame)??

the shackles should be near vertical
I dont really have any idea about when launching, but I would think the shackle would move toward the rear because the spring is compressing

I have about 1"-1 1/4".

The read spring eye shoud go back on squat and forward on raise.

Now with the torque on launch the body wants to raise on the right side and squat on the left... unless you have some sort of rear sway bar trying to keep the rear flat/level.

Here is my situation, with the car just sitting in a parked position, the rear spring eye is acutally up against the frame, would this cause the car to unload?? again I am no suspension expert so if its a stupid question I apologize in advance! Thanks!

its almost like there is no spearation anymore. Could this be why?

Forward or toward the rear ?

What shape are the bushings in ?

forward or to the rear?????
Bushings were new last year when I put the afco springs in.

looks like the shackles may be cheating toward the rear just a touch if that is what you meant...

I would think that if the springs were shot (sagging) or too long to begin with the shackle would be forced back instead of hanging straight down. You'll get more replies with this in the suspension forum...

Sounds like the springs are too long!!

If the shackles are hitting the frame at rest!

Springs can't work b/c they are in a bind at rest and worse under squat..

What I dont understand is I have had these on the car for right at a year and they worked fine, now the rear end isnt sitting near as high as it used to, is it possible they have just settled?? Would a longer shackel work?

The thing is that i bought these springs this time last year and all was good, now the springs seems to have settled or something. I bought some longer shackles last night and will install tonight, do you think this will help the car hook better? It used to hook on any surface pulling the wheels 6-8 inches now it just jumps up and straight back down, could this stuff cause this situation?

I had the exact same problem with my car. The rear spring eye rubbing on the frame rail was noisy. From the drivers seat it sounded like a loose shock.

The problem was a bad shackle bushing. The hole in the center of the bushing had elongated which caused the spring eye to move up enough to rub on the frame rail. I installed new shackle bushings and the problem was solved.

these were all installed new with the springs last year.

Don’t assume the bushings are still good because they are only a year old. A hot tailpipe near the bushings can soften them up. If they were apart just last year it should be an easy job to check them out.

This is a Drag Car, no tail pipes. I'll check them.
