View Full Version : Shocks Not Long Enough. 68 Camaro multi leaf conversion. Any suggestions???
68CamaroJoe Jul 28th, 07, 12:31 AM Hey Guys, I have a problem with the length of the shocks on my 68 camaro. I converted the rear end from a mono leaf 10 bolt to a Multi leaf 12 bolt posi...
Problem now, is that the shocks are not long enough to reach the body properly with up and down travel. If mounted, they are completely maxxed out all the way to the top. The shocks are new Monroes and are supposed to be made for a muilti leaf setup.
Any suggestions on what to do to get the shocks to work?? Ive heard of shock extentions to help this problem, anyone else heard of them or know where I can get them???
I want to run about a 1" lowering block, but if they dont even work now at stock height, a lowering block will make it worse.
Please help!
Rhino Jul 28th, 07, 06:32 AM By "Maxed out" do you mean they are fully compressed or fully extended? If they are fully extended lowering the car will make the situation better, not worse.
JimM Jul 28th, 07, 06:41 AM Worth noting that lowering blocks change the position of the axle centerline on the spring. They won't affect the shock length, cause the shock is mounted to the spring which stays in the same place.
Mono shock plates drop the lower eye of the shock about an inch compared to multi shock plates, to make up for the difference in the perch and the spring pack thickness. I believe the shocks are the same length, tho they are different part numbers because the lower mounting is different.
It's perfectly normal, if the car is supported by the frame and the axle / springs are hanging, for the axle to hang so low the shocks won't go back on. Just lift the axle until they will.
Need more details to know if you really have a problem.
BPOS Jul 28th, 07, 01:21 PM I'm running mono plates with multi leafs - I haven't noticed any problems, but the shocks ARE pretty much maxed out lengthwise at ride height. ("almost" fully extended) Basically, you have two options if you're not happy with that set-up. Shock extenders or mult-leaf shock plates. Here is a link for the extenders, which would be cheaper and an easier install.

The shcoks are maxxed out in that they are fully extended all the way, and the thread barely will go through the body where it mounts at the top.
So, fully extended.

Yeah thats the exact problem I am having. When the car is sitting they are maxxed out lengthwise.
I actually bought a set of those shock type extenders from Classic Industries in HB, but the thread size where the shock threads go into extenders is one size larger than the shock threads themselves.
Not sure why the thread size is different on the extenders Classic Industries sells???
The new rear shocks I have are the Monroe Matic plus shocks,
part # 32126, specific for a 68 camaro with multi leaf springs. Dont know why they arent long enough.
I dont really know what else I can do.
Any suggestions?
GMJoe Jul 28th, 07, 03:45 PM NAPA has the shock extensions on stock, no need to mail order.
I have multi-leaf springs on my 67 with mono leaf lower plate and i had to use the extensions , Ive been using them for a year with no ill effects....

Thanks geterdone, Ill call them on Monday to see if they have of those extensions for my 68. I checked their website and they are closed for the day, and closed Sunday.
Do you know how many extra inches those shock extensions from NAPA gave your shocks?
GMJoe Jul 29th, 07, 08:04 AM I just measured them they gave you 1 1/4" .
My 67 sits pretty high in the rear and they work great.
davidpozzi Jul 29th, 07, 10:19 AM With shocks nearly fully extended, you run the risk of sudden oversteer in a hard corner. The inside shock will fully extend and then not allow the suspension to move, this will act like an anti-roll bar on the of infinite size.

wiskeesour Jul 29th, 07, 11:15 AM If its NEW 5 springs, the are gonna be 'arched' more than stock and will eventually settle......making the car lower making the shocks longer....to help keep from oversteering in corners. BAD NOISE< UGLY ENDING
