View Full Version : Need Help - What's This Wire For?
DougP Aug 2nd, 07, 07:21 PM The guy who owned the car before me butchered the wiring harness to install an MSD 6AL box and some other "stuff". I have almost everything "unbutchered" except for the 12 ga. pink wire in the pictures below. The wire doesn't show up on the wiring schematic in the assembly manual.
I bought the wiring diagram manual from Team Camaro member Larry, and it shows that it connects to a 20 ga white/orange/purple resistance wire that goes to the positive side of the coil, and gets power when the ignition switch is turned on. Since I'm running an HEI, can anybody ID this wire and let me know what its used for? Thanks in advance for any help.

hereitis67 Aug 2nd, 07, 08:06 PM thats the resistance wire that goes to the coil. but not to hei. in running for a regular points and coil it runs on 8 volts not 12 volts.there was another wire that ran from starter to coil so when started car gave coil 12 volts for hotter spark to start car. which probally you may not find wire since it went to starter to coil only.most people take it out when running hei ignition.
Eric Kammerer Aug 2nd, 07, 10:13 PM That pink doesn't look like an OE resistance wire, it looks like someone replaced the resistance wire with straight 12 ga for HEI/MSD feed.
it's hard to tell from the pic, which slot on the connecter does it come out of? Looking at Larry's diagram of the connector, the ignition feed is on "BX" location.
Does that other wire going up come out of the same slot, or is that an optical illusion? That's the one that looks like it could be the cloth wrapped resistance wire.
Everett#2390 Aug 3rd, 07, 04:39 AM From my Chilton's copyright 1972, the orange wire is blower, then above it is the resistance wire for coil.
I agree with Eric, it may be a PO-installed HEI power wire. Where does the wire come from inside the firewall?
Trace it back to see, ignition feed is a pink 12 GA. from the ign switch.
DougP Aug 6th, 07, 06:09 AM Thanks for the help guys -- I found that when you run an HEI you don't need this wire. It ties back to the ignition switch and gets power when the switch is in the "RUN" position. So I fired up the motor long eoungh to find out that my fuel pump took a dump. No big deal --- I'll replace it today. However, my electrical problems continue
I installed the headlights and when I turned on the switch the lights didn't come on, but the light on the dash for "BRIGHT" and "GEN" came on -- even though the ignition was in the "Off" position. BTW -- clicking the "BRIGHT" switch on the floorboard did not change anything. I also usd a test light and found out that I had power to the black ground wire in the connector going to the headlight
Oh well -- I'll keep poking around later -- its time for a beer :beers:
Everett#2390 Aug 6th, 07, 10:11 AM I installed the headlights and when I turned on the switch the lights didn't come on, but the light on the dash for "BRIGHT" and "GEN" came on -- even though the ignition was in the "Off" position. BTW -- clicking the "BRIGHT" switch on the floorboard did not change anything. This happens when the engine is not running and ignition key is on. Also, if alternator is broken or regulator is broken, or wired incorrectly. Check for a good ground connection behind the dash from the inst cluter to ground.I also used a test light and found out that I had power to the black ground wire in the connector going to the headlight Check and maybe add a star washer between the black and radiator support. Black wire is ground/return and needs a good surface contact for current to flow. Don't forget to ground rad support to battery negative post.
DougP Aug 6th, 07, 07:46 PM Everette -- thanks for the advice -- I'll check it out
mark x22 Aug 6th, 07, 08:28 PM the pink wire and the resistance wire are on the same terminal .the pink one i think is for the anti dieseling solenoid on some cars .
Everett#2390 Aug 7th, 07, 05:08 AM You're welcome. Anti-diesel solenoid wasn't thought of in the sixties'. I don't think they appeared till after 1970 or 1971.
mark x22 Aug 7th, 07, 04:04 PM in the AIM its on pages , M35 , A23 & A25 . M40 , A10 . M38 A2 under carburetor
mudflap Aug 13th, 07, 02:50 PM hi doug, I also have the pink unknown wire on my car. don't show in any diagrams. it has a female plug at the end and is about 2 ' long. cruise control, idle stop solenoid, ??????????? its driving me nuts! no idea where it goes.
DougP Aug 14th, 07, 10:18 AM Frank,
I'm running an HEI and do not have that pink wire hooked up to anything -- car started and ran fine yesterday (until the carb started leaking -- which is a whole other story!)
ruquik Sep 26th, 07, 12:21 PM The big wire is most probably for the anti diesel solenoid. I have seen many of these on Small block 1969 cars and they were also on L78 automatic cars in 69. Hope this helps, they were on some 69 stuff for sure.

click Sep 26th, 07, 01:49 PM It most likely is for a car with A/C for the solenoid that steps up the idle when the a/c is running then. It helps shut the car off and sorta kinda acts like anti-dieseling solenoid but it was intended for kicking UP the idle in a/c . ??
