I am looking at purchasing a 68 Camaro with a vinyl top (which I plan to remove during the restification of the car). I'm curious, do those who remove these tops generally find rust? It seems to me the vinyl roof would be a perfect place for water to collect and cause rust. The car looks clean, I'm just curious if the vinyl is a rust trap.

On a side note, what am I liable to run into in the process of returning this car to its proper configuration as a steel top? http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif Can someone describe how the vinyl is attached (holes to be filled, etc.)?

Thanks!

I will offer my experience with vinyl tops. I will never buy one again. I have restored 10 and there were rusted out holes in the roof or in the area where the trim meets the windows. This is a big water trap. They most always from my 20 years in working on them have a lot of pitting as well. I would just clean things up and use a good sealer and put the vinyl back on. Who knows you might get lucky and have a clean top.

On vinyl top removal. There almost always is rust, I had some even on my 67 Arizona desert coupe. The other issue is that some of the vinyl top cars need major panel work if you are going to leave the vinyl top off after paint.
