I need help guys!! I have the windshield out of the ragtop ('69) to paint the dash and replace the a-post stainless. The frame around the window was left in primer (only visible under visors) and I want to paint it as well.

How in the he11 does the chrome 2 piece cap come off? I have all the fasteners removed, the cap is the only thing left to remove... It apears to be spring snapped into place but I fear bending ir denting it if I try to pry it off!! Any suggestions appreciated!!

DJD, in my 67 body by fisher it says they are retained by screws, but no mention of being a spring fit,as on some other models listed, possably there is some sealer under them that is holding them on?
I have a hard top so i cant say for sure but wanted to mention what i seen in the book. You guys have always tried to help me, so i wanted to return the favor. Good Luck.

ok, in the camaro restoration handbook it does state they will have to be pryed loose do to probably being stuck to body caulking, so maybe a little heat gun action is called for and a careful tug. hope this helps.

Thanks for the info!! Both the books I have didn't cover it. I can tell they arn't set in sealer http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif as I can get them to slide back and forth about 1". Unless I get more ideas, I'll be recuting a second pair of hands to see if they can be muscled off....

DJD,
Pry them loose using a piece of wood if you can. If you have nothing else, sharpen a paint stir stick with sandpaper. You might have to sharpen 2 or 3 (they break easy).
Move the wood pry bar around the header caps and don't pry just from one location.
The other posts are correct, there is sealer under the caps that prevent water from blowing under them when it rains.

Thanks Toby!! In my case there should be sealer but there isn't... It slides too easy along the windoe frame. http://www.camaros.net/forum/eek.gif

I just replaced mine, pull the cap towards the door about 2-3 inches and then pull from the bottom of the cap and it should come off. BTW it is somewhat spring loaded in that the bottom has pressure towards the frame, also you may have to touchup the paint on the bottom after installation, I did. Another thing, use some sealer under the caps to prevent squeeks.

On my 67 convert, I tugged on them for a while with the windshield in and then gave up. Once I got the windshield out I used the end of a wood hammer handle to pop the front edge of the moulding up a bit and just worked it along the whole length until it popped off. Doing it from the front (outside) on my 67 seemed to be the easiest way since it is only 1/4 inch bent over the edge.
