I get up Sunday morning hop in my truck with the race car on the trailer loaded up tied down ready to go racing. I get to the top of the Cajon Pass on I-15 and start down, after a mile or two all of sudden the trailer brake feels like it came on and was stopping the truck. I looked in my mirror and the left rear tire on the trailer (dual axle) looks like a Top Fueler doing a burnout. I get it pulled over on the shoulder and check it out my first thought was I seized a bearing or flat tire. The tire was pushed back against the fender, I got under the trailer and the 4 leaf spring was now 2-1/2 the bottom leaf was gone and the next one broke in half and the whole axle shifted back. I got my floor jack and jacked up the trailer frame and found out I could push the axle back into where it should go but it would only have half a leaf to hold it in place. So I'm walking around the side of the trailer trying to figure out a way out of this when I looked in the dirt and saw a couple of new 5/8" wheel studs. What saved me was I had my tools for the race car so I put the stud in the space where the leafs go and tightened the U bolts down so the threads would bite into the metal and started the truck and limped it down to the next off ramp. My thinking was if I could make it to the next off ramp (about 3 miles ) I'll deal with it there off the freeway. The Rube Goldberg fix held to the off ramp so I turned around and went back up the Cajon Pass at 35 MPH, I kept waiting for the repair to give up the game but it hung in there and I limped the truck and trailer about 20 miles to my house. Anybody know a good trailer parts house online ? Check out the freeway fix it job.
