View Full Version : license plate recognition program
angelglo Aug 12th, 07, 11:35 AM anyway, some of you might already know about the license plate recognition program that we have been testing for over a year. chp has it up and running in full force though not every patrol car is equipped with it. it utilizes the reflectorized plates(which has been an intersting topic in the past couple of years) that your car has. this is yet another reason ca. is pushing for reflectorized plates on all cars. the system will scan plates as the patrol car drives down the street. it looks at plates on both left and right sided of the patrol car. if you see a cop car with funny looking round gizmos, the size of a closed fist, on the top of the patrol car on eash side of the light bar, it is for the plate recognition. it doesnt look at the car in front of the patrol car for some reason. i was told that this is because the copper should already be running the plate in front of him. anyway, this is good news for everyone to be able to get their stolen cars back alot quicker. one patrol car recovered several hundred stolen cars in one month alone.
guccieng Aug 12th, 07, 02:16 PM very interesting. what about those of us with out of state plates (i'm in the military, so a non-cali resident)? can it recognize any plate, or only the cali ones? what about those of us with the old blue or black with yellow letters/numbers cali plates (my 69 still has them)? i can only assume it won't work with them since they are not reflective. does it work with the front plates, too?
Havin' Fun Aug 12th, 07, 02:29 PM I've been informed there are systems in place that do not require special plates. They not only read the cars in all lines directly in front of the scanners but also to left and right. For on coming traffic, and parked on the right. And can be scanned at almost any speed. And almost instantaneously notifying the user of issues more than just stolen cars. But also for vehicle owner warrants, or vehicles used in crimes and so on.
Oh, and FWIW. These same scanners will in the VERY near future also do face recognition.

Or do you mean the ones that go under the skin?
jackr Aug 12th, 07, 04:53 PM They have been using that system in Arizona for a while now. It has allowed the DPS officers to catch stolen cars on the fly....on the freeway. I have 1966 issue AZ plates on my 67 but they are reflectored.

Won't be needed Paul... They've been putting a tracing element in all processed foods for 20 years now and every time you go to the bathroom (either) the govt gets a report on you... :D They not only know where you are but what you had to eat and drink! :D lol... ;):noway:
jackr Aug 12th, 07, 06:14 PM LOL on the tracing element.
Has California installed the speed cameras on the freeways yet? We have them here and more are coming. 11 over and they mail the ticket.
There was the one guy in a early 70's olds 442 that thought it was funny to go by at well over 100 several times giving the middle finger salute. He probably won't be driving for a while...the car did look nice in the pictures though....

how far off are we from having cameras in our house, too?
pdq67 Aug 13th, 07, 06:16 AM And we got a GOV out east being driven around by a Trooper that almost got ejected when they wrecked in traffic running 92 mph!
Wonder what happened as far as making somebody responsible??
Didn't they try ta pin it on the poor guy trying to get out of their high flying way??
Oh, I forgot, the masses are the only one's held responsible!! NOT the elites!!

I believe most new computers have them already installed. It wouldn't take much to look "inside" with the right knowledge.
And then there are the web cams everywhere. When just about anyone can install one of these in or at their home for less than $200.00.
We have them ALL over the roads here. Interstates seems like every 1/2 mile, intersections.
Just recently they have been installing speed limit signs with radars and above the signs show your actual speed, and if you are 1mph over that posted speed, it starts blinking a very bright white strobe light as if you just robbed a store or something and won't stop until you slow to the correct speed. I am sure they are just around the corner of taking pictures and issuing tickets with them. And these are on 20mph side streets!
If I could post pictures on this site, I'd post 'em.:(

I remember NOT having to pay full price for registration when I was in the military. I miss those days. :o Now that I retired, I have to pay full price.

davidpozzi Aug 14th, 07, 12:01 AM Can it recognize the plates of different states?
pdq67 Aug 14th, 07, 06:01 AM David,
I think they are all standardized now so it won't matter, they would probably just run it through the Federal Data base until it popped up somewhere..

Havin' Fun Aug 14th, 07, 08:04 AM Can it recognize the plates of different states?
Certainly. All it does is takes a picture of the plate, recognizes the "letters" and runs it through the database. Fairly simple concept, the part that has taken to so long is being able to transfer the pieces of information almost instantaneously.
Hence the reason for the delay in the face recognition cameras. Picture this, Walk past a troopers car, and instantly he knows everything there is to know about you. Good for some, not so good for others.
onovakind67 Aug 14th, 07, 08:59 AM People will bitch about it until it benefits them.
