: Any Reef Tanks out there?

Didn't see this one on the boards as of yet, so I thought I'd ask and see how many other TC'ers have the saltwater addiction like myself.

First off, I have two tanks......one being a 35 gallon reef and the other being a 14 gallon Bio-Cube reef.....both known as nano tanks.

The 35 gallon is a two year old basic of the basics.....5 gallon sump, UV sterilizer, Emperor 400, 12K-175W Metal Haylide along with a single 65W Actinic flourecent.

I have about 70 #s of live rock and about 40 #s of live sand. There are all sorts of different corals including Frogspawn, Clot Coral, Mushrooms, Zoos, Trumpet Coral, Tree Coral, Toadstools Leathers, Plate Corals and so fourth.

As far as livestock I have about 20ish red and blue leg crabs, one Mexican Turbo snail, about 10 Astrea snails, one Brittle Starfish, one Yellow Tang, one Pink Spotted Watchman Gobie and two Ocellaris Clownfish.

The 14 gallon Bio-Cube is about 7 months old. Has about 20 #s of live sand, around 30 #s of live rock, lots and lots of green and red Star Polyps, a few Watermelon Shrooms, a few maroon colored Shrooms, a large peice of Colt Coral, some green Ricordia, and a few orange zoos.

Livestock......two False Perculas, 8 Nassarius Snails, 5 Blue Leg Crabs, 3 Astrea Snails that I'm guessing have had lots of offspring here in the past few weeks, and finally one Purple Lobster.

Both of these tanks are doing fantastic so far. They both have had thier ups and downs as will any tank, but these two seem to be doing very very well.

Here are a few older pictures.......I'll try and get a few more recent pics of both tanks if there is any intrest.

Thanks guys,

Joe

Nice looking tank, Joe. I had one, but it got too expensive and I can only afford one hobby at a time. Once it started taking all the camaro money it had to go. I have most of the equipment still and a custom 26" starphire cube tank which I will eventually set up, but not until the camaro is on the road and painted. The old tank was a 90 gallon, I had it set up for about 3 years. Here's a link to my pics of it: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v59/mmorrison/Reef%20Tank/

Hey Joe,

Did you want this back here with all the political jabber? Only a small number of folks sign up and visit this forum... Let me know and I can move it to bench...

I had salt water when I lived in Socal but didn't bring it with me to Norcal. The live rock was just becoming popular when I gave away my tank. My favorites were my lion fish and my hawaiian trigger, I think it was watching them eat that hooked me on them. You know I wouldn't stick my hand in a box with a spider or snake in it but never had a problem sticking my hand in the tank with the lion fish...

Your tank looks great, would a lobster or two be bothered by the yellow tang? If not they might be a nice addition...

Dennis, yeah, I thought I'd put it here to make sure I didn't get yelled at for putting it elsewhere. Ya, that would be cool to move it if you would.

The Tang and the Lobster are in two different tanks. I did think about that and seperated them for the simple fact that they prolly wouldent get along.

I'll take some pictures this afternoon if I can. I have a b-day party going on so it might not happen.

Mike, nice tank man!!!!

Thanks guys,

Joe

Cool to see another reefer on here!
I have a 90 gal reef tank in my family room plumbed to a 70 gal sump over in my garage work area.

Water filter w/auto topoff, UV, skimmer, 2x500 10k mh & 4x55 actinic, black cabinet/hood, 4 maxijets for flow. 180lb fiji live rock, and 4 inch live sand bed.

My fish are 2 maroon Clown (mated pair), hippo Tang, yello Tang, squareback Anthias, coral Beauty, spotted manderian Goby, 6line Wrasse.

My corals are; blue/red/green mushrooms, button polyps, some zoo's, green branching frogspawn, glove polyp, and a cpl leathers, and a rose anemone for the clowns.

I have had this system up and running for just under 7yrs. Yes most of my fish are at least 6yrs old, and my anemone has split no less than 5 times to date (which has been nice lil return on investment). I purchased all my fish basicly at the same time and got the smallest I could find, so they would acclimate to each other and the system (past experience found fish are territorial, and additions later often have it ruff!). It has been amazing watching the fish grow and the corals none the less, and a great conversation piece for when company comes over.

Alas though its time to tear it down. 7yrs of saltwater humidity even with a de-humidifier has been a pia, keeping my tools rust free, and not to mention anything else made of metal! Yes reeef tanks are fun and you can even automate alot of maintance such as water top offs, etc... but to keep it nice looking took about 1 hour a day of my time. Time I no longer have in abundance with a new born at home, 2 car projects lined up, and my day job.

Luckily I have been able to give my fish to various homes via the local saltwater store (couldn't sell them off, had to give to good homes!). I have been harvesting my corals as time allows and fragging them out to friends and the local fish store.

I am told the local shop will buy my remaining live rock and will either buy my various hardware or let me sell it thru their shop. Which is really cool imo, but they should considering the $$$ that has been spent there over the last 7yrs!

I have thought about keeping some frags and doing a nano cube though, but who knows! Time seems to be my biggest issue.

Nice looking setup, I love clown fish...

I have 55gal with oscars in it right now....I had a 120gal setup for my 3' amazon redtail cat, and a 10gal for his food...lol....I had a 35gal hex with a bunch of different fish....

My amazon was eating about $50 a week worth of feeder fish before he died....I still have everything, just got tired of messing with them all the time...

I had a fish in bowl I won at a carnival by landing a ping pong ball in it. It lived for about 6 months. That was enough fish for me. I was sorta glad the cat got it. Now when I play that game and win I just give them to some family near the game.

Doing these tanks has to be a labor of love for sure!! Very pretty stuff there guys!!
