Here goes. Sorry if its a bit long.

Back in Feb, I got an HD DVR from Directv. There are two satellite inputs that come directly from the multi switch on the roof. This allows you to watch one program while recording another.

When the technician came to install it, there was already one line coming into the room since I had a tv in the room already. All he needed to do was bring in a second line from the multiswitch. To do this, he noticed that there was co-ax going to another room where there was no longer a tv. Using a connector he ran a cable through the outside wall of the house into the room where i needed the second signal. Anyway, as part of his installation, he showed me everything was working. Both he an I forgot to check that both satellite inputs were working. I did not notice until he left, that the box was only receiving on signal. I noticed that the one line that was not working had a short at the f connector right where it went into the box. The line was replaced and both signals were received by the tuner without a problem. About two weeks later, the one input (the one that was connected using the connector outside the house) stopped working. I decided to hook this wire into the other input and it worked. Therefore, both lines coming into the house worked in input 1 but neither worked in input two.
I replaced the connector outside my house linking the existing line i mentioned earlier with the new line and had directv send me another box. Once again, the box worked fine for about two weeks. Then again the one input seemed to have been zapped. Once again i tested both lines in input 1 and they worked, neither worked in input 2.

This time i called directv they came out tested the wire and said it was the box. They gave me a new box and the same problem happended again. Three boxes all malfunctioning the same way with the second input not working. seems like something might be wrong with either the line or the multiswitch as opposed to 3 boxes all having the same problem.

please let me know what you think. is it possible that there is a sporadic or latent short that zaps the input.

sounds like you might have more comon sense, troubleshooting capabilities than the tech's at DTV!!!

I was told the LNB's on the dish might have an intermitent short, that is impacting (frying) the satellite input on the back of the box.

this is way beyond my scope of knowledge so i am not sure if it makes sense or not
