View Full Version : 69 Z/28 numbers matching
Unreal Aug 15th, 07, 12:05 PM I have a buddy who is thinking of letting go of his 69 Z. He is second owner, and has had it since about 1990.
Original Cowl hood car (confirmed by window sticker)
Original Drive train
Original engine overbuilt to 12 or 12.5:1 compression ratio. Has headers
Original early takeoff manifolds and smog with sticker on diverter in box
Original restored carb
Original Alternator (In box)
Original distributor (in box)
Original window sticker
lots of original maintenance receipts.
Don't know about protecto plate, but I'll bet he has it.
GM Quarters
One replaced fender (GM)
Original Door Panels Rest of interior (standard black) is reproduction.
Radial tires. Flat rally centers.
Originally Fathom or Frost Green (Can't remember) but painted Garnet w/ black stripes (BC/CC) about 10 years ago. Garage kept since restored.
About a year or so ago, I told him it was worth $70-80k, but it looks like the market has softened a little. I could use a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc opinion.
68IslTeal Aug 15th, 07, 12:42 PM Really need pix to give even a fair est. it could range from 25k to 85k. But it depends on condition, documentation, and how close to original. However your right it seems he avg is around the 50k mark from what I have been seeing for nice numbers matching cars.
Unreal Aug 15th, 07, 01:29 PM I know pics would be great, but when it comes to a car this original and well restored, pics don't matter much. I haven't seen the car for a couple of years (resides at my buddy's son's house) but I'd give it a solid 9/10.
If anyone would prefer to include the qualifier "If it's as nice as you say" that's fine with me.
I'm not trying to buy it myself, or sell it here. Just trying to help a friend determine it's value.
Thanks for any and all input.
Old Man Aug 15th, 07, 01:36 PM Seems to me the market on these cars is cyclick. A couple of years ago when I started looking for my Camaro the SS's were bringing top dollar followed by the RS/SS's and the Z's. Here lately there are alot of Z28's on the market bringing top dollar. I think the market has stablized now if not softened up some. Looks to me like a good Z28 will fetch between 45K and 55K depending on the condition and originality.
DjD Aug 15th, 07, 01:53 PM Well I don't think as described even a year ago it was worth $70k - $80k. I'm sure it's a gem but I see it this way;
It's had body (both quarters and 1 fender replaced) and paint work done 10 years ago and paint does not match the tag, it has a reproduction interior, the engine internally isn't stock (nice to have some of the orig external parts though).
The documentation is a plus but before this car is worth that kind of money it needs an expensive engine rebuild and a second repaint. Add all the little additional details and you'll be spending $20k beyond what you pay for it before it really stands out in the numbers matching, restored market. As is $40k - $50k max, last year or this year... The sad part is it has a perfectly good paint job and engine but both are holding the car back...
Gary L Aug 15th, 07, 02:11 PM I am thinking about $50-65K. All numbers, even though the engine is built. Is the 12.5:1 engine using the off-road cam? I don't think it would hurt much if it is. Repro interior is just a fact. Too bad about the red paint. Numbers cars are getting rare these days it seems. Any interesting options?
drdave69 Aug 15th, 07, 03:25 PM I agree with Dennis, probably $45k - $52K.
Unreal Aug 26th, 08, 01:26 PM Well, I'm sad to report, my friend's son sold the car about a month ago for $40K. Including early takeoff smog and exhaust manifolds. Also included a 480 distributor in a box (MSD in the car) and 837 alternator in a box.
Maybe that's the going rate, but 40K sure seems low.
Gary L Aug 26th, 08, 01:37 PM Someone got a great deal. How was it advertised? Private sale out of the paper?
skipdaddie Aug 26th, 08, 04:59 PM I would estimate the car to be worth around $45K. So $40K was a deal, but not a steal.
Gary L Aug 26th, 08, 10:21 PM I would estimate the car to be worth around $45K. So $40K was a deal, but not a steal.
Put another way, the buyer bought low. The right way to buy.....when no one else wants it.
Unreal Aug 27th, 08, 04:00 AM I'm not sure, but I think it was word of mouth. Not advertised.
Hylton Aug 27th, 08, 02:35 PM That wasn't a steal but a good buy.
