Hi guys -

I'm going to be installing a new aftermarket console gauge pod w/four gauges, all electric. I would like to make a harness with a plug connection so that the pod can be removed by simply unplugging a connection.

I think a plug connector with 10 slots should be more than enough. Any good sources/tips? Thanks!

Al,
Here are a few companies that I've purchased electrical products from.

I found what I needed at radio shack.

Also, depending on what guages you use, you won't need more than 7 wires, and possibly as few as 3!

Note:

Console gauge harness all ready contains:

Gray: Gauge illumination circuit to shift quadrant, tap for gauge lighting.
Black: Ground, you will find it screwed to the "U" bracket that holds the front of the console down, ground your gauges there.
Pink w/Bk stripe: At least on my 68, this went to the backup light switch on the automatic shifter, circuit is ignition (hot in run) I used it for power to my gauges. Assuming you're using a voltmeter, that will also power here (note 69's may be different)

That leaves 3 wires for the other gauge senders, tho I think the 69 backup light switch is on the column, so add 1 more for power.

Thanks for the info, Jim. I never thought of using any of the console harness for power sources. And too bad I wired the gauge pod BEFORE I came back to look at this thread. Oh well, I accomplished what I wanted to, which was to be able to unplug the entire gauge pod with a single plug-in connector.

I wound up going to U-Pull-It and scrounging a bunch of wire and connectors. I found a body harness off of some late model van - the thing weighs close to 10 lbs. There must be 2 or 3 hundred feet of wire in it and all sorts of pretty colors. Cost me $15.

Spent the afternoon wiring the pod. I soldered and heat shrink tubed all of the connections, and it took quite some time. Next week I'll finish up the under dash and under hood stuff. It'll be nice to have matching all electric gauges instead of the mishmash of crap I had before. Thanks again.

FYI Jim - The 69 Horseshoe auto trans shifter has the neutral safety and back up light switches in the console attached to the shifter.

Nice wiring job Al. It looks great and won't ever give you trouble.

It sure can be time consuming to do something right!
