I was on the phone about to order my tires and wheels. The sales guy warned me about a tire this big on a 1967. Is anyone having major issues with a tire this size on a 17X9.5 rim?

No just order the correct back spacing and you should have no problem

How about a 275 with a 9" wheel? Can I get away with 5.00 backspacing?

You want to get really confused? Read this - lots of good info. http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10840&highlight=295 By the way I agree with what has previously been stated 275s on 9.5s with 5.5" backspace. That thread does have some great info in it though.

Believe it or not the custom wheel companies suggest 5 and 3/8". If that's not available 5.25" or if the only option is 5 or 5.5 go with the 5.5. It's better to error on the inside than the outside.

that's what i run, but i did have to trim the wheel well opening. it's a 69, so i don't know if you would have to.

275/40R17 or 275/50R17? I run the 275/50R17 on an 8" rim with 5" back spacing and it fits with lots of clearance. I plan to run 325/50R17s on either 9" or 9.5" rims when these wear out. This is on a 67 Firebird with a Moser 9".

i run the 275/40. are you sure you want a tire that's almost 30 inches tall? that's huge! you'll need a very low rear gear, too. you must be tubbed, right?

Back again.

I daily drove my car w/ old style, L-60/14's on 9" Fenton slotted mag's w/ 3.5" b/s!!

They are still mounted and up on my top shelf in my garage!!

They measure a modern 298/53-14 so go from there!!

I had to run coil-overs to raise her like 4" to 4.5"s to keep from cutting my tire roll/corners!!

I figure that a 17" x 26.5" tall tire w/ a 12" section width on a 10" rim w/ a 5.25" b/s will fit fine !!!

And I'm going to find a pair of real slicks that size too.

Stock tubs and with over 500 ft-lbs @3800 rpm at the rear wheels I've actually had to reduce my gearing from 3.70 to 3.50s to try to hook the torque. Especially when I hit the nitrous and the torque jumps to nearly 700 rwtq. Both the 275/50R17s and 325/50R17s are 28" tall. About perfect for my car. Taller tires hook a bit better than shorter tires and since we're still talking a 50 series 17" DR tire my handling has not suffered at all. I had 25.5" 265/40R17s on before and they hooked rather poorly. ;)

"Both the 275/50R17s and 325/50R17s are 28" tall."

the 325/50r17 cannot be the same height as the 275/50r17. with the 50 aspect ratio, 50% of 275 is not equal to 50% of 325. the tci calcualtors put it at 29.8 inches tall:

http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInfo/Calculators.asp

a 325/45 will put you at 28.5, still taller than the 275/50r17.

You may want to consider getting a rim with a bit more backspace than you think you need. It is a lot easier to add a 1/4" spacer than to have new rims made.

235/40-17s up front. No scrubbing on the fender but light scrubbing on the frame on tight inclined turns.

325/25.4 (conversion of MM to inches) =12.79. 12.79 + 17 = 29.79 tire diameter

275/25.4 = 10.83. 10.83 + 17 = 27.83 tire dia

You can also put the tire size, rear end and tranny gears into this calculator and it will calculate the tire diameter for you. http://www.f-body.org/gears/

And fwiw, I ran old Firestone 9.50/14 mud&snow tires on my car using my coil-overs and my stock 14" x 6" rims w/ 3.75" b/s years ago.

They measured like 29.5" tall!!

And I got an old pic of them on my car..

He, He!! Speedometer when from 70 to 82 mph at 30/3100 rpm!!

No way a 295 is gonna fit if the car is lowered at all. Sounds like your car had a mean rake to it. I think he is going for the P/T looks and that means the car is either getting lowered or already is low.
