I have what I believe to be the orig multi leaf 10 bolt rear for my '72 Nova. I plan to replace the mono leaf rear which I believe is an 8.2".

What I have is: JG G098 2 - with 1 GM 3984825 15 41 4 72... What I know is it's a open 2.73:1

I also have a carrier that I was told will bolt in, it got 410408N GM8 and L15 on it. The ring gear is stamped 2 GM 398425 15 41 12 78 and the pinion to go with it 1978 3984826 15 41 2 12.

So it's also a 2.73:1 but it's from 1978. Will it work in my housing? Are both carriers 8.5's? I'd really rather roll with a 3.42:1 gear which I know would need a 3 series carrier. If I decide I can live with 2.72's is it worth using the '78 parts?

I did test for the '72 axles in the '78 carrier and they fit properly... Farm Boy the gears are in motion... ;)

Ok - I just had someone inform me that the late style 8.5" 2.73 carrier will fit 3.08, 3.42, 3.73 and 4.10 gears and what would be refered to as a 2 series carrier would fit 2.41 and 2.56 gears. Is that correct?

The info is here Dennis: http://novaresource.org/axle.htm
But I'm too tired and lazy right now to help you make any sense of it. First glance I see no JG, tho I do see a GJ, and a JQ.

The 410408 is a 3 series Traction Lock for the 8.5 with 28 spline axles. It will fit any 8.5 with 28 spline axles and 2.73 to 5.13 gears. I have clutches and some other parts for it if you need them.

Thanks guys, Jim I was reading a post on Team Nova where someone else has a JG also, that got me searching and I went to the Nova Resources site. I now think I have a JB with a poorly stamped B as everything else would line up perfect... Thanks for the link.

Freddie - is there a way to check the carrier to see if the clutches are good with out pulling it apart? Thanks

Put a tire with an axle on it on the floor sticking up. Put the carrier on it. Put another axle with a tire on it into the top of the carrier. Stand on the bottom tire and try to turn the top one.

If it's new, it won't budge.
