: Rear end offset??

My 12 bolt rear end's center is closer to the passenger side at least 1'' measured from the yoke to the mounting pads. Is this correct? My trans tail shaft is in the center of the frame which puts the FRONT of my driveshaft in the center and makes the REAR of the driveshaft 1'' off. Here is a pic that would better explain my question. http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k264/pnewell44/000_1351.jpg

is one rear wheel sticking out an inch more than the other?

No. These measurements were taken from the yoke center all over the place on the frame AND the rear end housing. You can see that the center section chunk of the rear end is offset like I drew in the pic.?

Not mine but this shows the offset of the pinion yoke. Patrick's drawing gets his point across but shows one axle shorter than the other. The axles are the same length, the slight offset is in the housing itself...

Yep DjD^^^ the offset is in the housing and that would put the yoke closer to one side than the other and if the tranny is in the center that would make the drive shaft at an angle. Wouldn't that cause a vibration?
So is the tranny supposed to be in the center?

All rear wheel drive Chevy cars have the pinion offset 1/2 inch from center to the right. This makes the pinion center line 1 inch closer to the right than the left. This goes for all car rear ends, 7.5, 8.2, 8.5 and 12 bolt, Camaro, Chevelle, Nova, Monte Carlo, Impala...

Well isn't the trans center line in the center? Wouldn't this make your drive shaft "out of alignment" , or at an angle?

If anyone has their car on jack stands would you please measure the tailshaft of your trans side to side from the frame and see if it's in the center, please.

No, b/c driveshafts need to operate parallel on each end, but out of alignment like an inch from each end both sideways and vertically so that they are "phased" right.

You mount a driveshaft up 100 percent straight and I bet it will vibrate really badly..

Remember that the ends have to be parallel, but offset in both planes a schosh to work right!
