I have a complete running 396 big block I may be selling in the future to build another engine. It is the 350 HP version (RPO code L34) that was avaliable in 1970 for the Chevelle SS, Camaro SS and the Nova SS models.

The suffix code is CTW. The head casting dates are Feb 4 and 5, 1970. The block casting IIRC is around Jan 29 1970. The original stamping in the pad is still there. Yes this is an actual SS engine avaliable on SS cars only, not just any old 396.

The heads are original to the block. I didn't get the original intake so i ended up going with an Edelbrock Performer RPM.

The engine was taken out .030 and fitted with Speed Pro forged pistons and a GM forged crank as I was planning on running nitrous (but never have). ARP chromeoly bolts were used in the fastening the reconditioned connecting rods, as well as on the stock main caps and the heads too.

A Comp .574/.578 lift hydraulic flat tappet cam was used with 3/8 chromeoly push rods and factory guideplates to push open the 2.06/1.72 valves via the 1.7 extra long rockers. A Cloyes double roller timing chain ties it to the crank.

Other parts used were a Holley 130 gph fuel pump sending fuel to a 4150 series Holley 750 cfm chokeless carburetor and a Mallory HEI distributor feeding electrical signals thru the Taylor 8 MM wires.

This engine runs great and has enough torque to pin you to the seat even at 45 mph. The engine doesn't even have 500 miles on it.

I've decided I want to set my car up for strip and in an effort to lighten the nose some I now have a 400 sbc I want to build.

I have over $3500 in this 396, not really sure what to ask for it....perhaps someone here can help?

I know it would be worth alot to whoever had the car it came out of, and especially since this engine could only be had if you ordered an SS for 1970......but in terms to someone wanting a 396 for their car, or even the average hot rodder, how much would it be worth?

Thanks.

Well...let me put it to you this way. If I was you I would seriously start looking for people with Stock eliminator cars that are 70 SS Chevelle's, Camaro's, & Nova's. Those guys are looking for engines with matching #'s for the year and make of those cars. My point is, Finding spare engines for those is starting to become quite a chore. I would find these people and ask them before telling them that you have one what they are going for and go from there. Just my opinion. But I think that would be a good avenue to go down to get a top dollar for your engine. IMHO
