I have a aluminum headed 396. What are the chances of my super T-10 holding up when I put the 250 shot of skeet on her?

I had one behind a blown big block in a Pro Street 57 Chevy with 4:56 gears and 18.5 rear tires and it held up. But, I never did get any traction in that car. If I could get it to hook it might have been a different story. I beat up that Super T-10 for about 10 years in that car and it never broke. Slicks and/or the track would probably be too much for it though.

The 2.43 geared one is rated for 375 FtLb, other ratios less.

Good Luck!

Anything can be broken. Get an iron case and don't use a 3.42 low box. If you can find a high nickel gear set use it but don't get too worried if you can't. The biggest thing is if it hooks at the track. If it doesn't hook hard you will wear it out before it breaks if it hooks hard it will need to be kept after.

Here is how I figure this!!

For our MUNCIES!!

M-20, like 400 T;

M-21, like 425 T;

M-22 like 450 T; and the Italian gearset, Supercase w/ the steel mid plate

600 T and maybe a schosh more!

So go from there!!

I think guys say that the lower 1st geared, (2.20??), ST-10's w/ a cast-iron main case and the aluminum tailhousing is a schosh stronger than our M-20, but I really don't know for sure??

But I do figure a comparably 1st geared, Ford Top-Loader will be stronger than our M-21 and maybe even our M-22??

As will MOPARS big A833 4-speed! Probably the strongest of the lot if it came off a real Hemi engine.

I say this all this way b/c I dug into this deep to try to come up w/ a good, STRONG, 4-speed to use behind my about 580T/496 after I shell my stock, M-20!!

Nobody will come right out and rate the old 4-speed tranny's is why it took so much digging to even get to this, imho!!

Anybody have better 4-speed T ratings, please post back so we ALL will learn something.

I had a superT10 in my car when I bought it. I punished it pretty bad before I started the resto. Going back with the original M21 but if numbers didnt matter, I was sold on the ST10. jmo Kevin

The following link has lots of good info on the ST10.

Try contacting the owner at Kajun, I think he has a list of most of the OEM torque ratings.
Hope this helps.

Weren't LS-6's backed by Muncies? Of course, with 14" bias-ply tires, the drivetrain is pretty safe, but Chevy wasn't too concerned,..even in a big and heavy 71 Chevelle. Also, ZL-1's and L-88's were mated to Muncies,..so, FWIW.

Run it 'til it pukes parts then get something stronger.

Mine finally scattered after 10 years of 454 packed gear stuffing and brutal side steps with a Ram brass clutch.... Lots of addiional parts inside. I'm torn on rebuilding it vs a TKO-600. I'm also in pain with the thought of parting with that much cash.....I gues I'm cheap. So far it's been the best 4 speed I've owed.... The 2.43 gear set based ST-10 is rated at 375 Ft Lb or torque.

nick V,

I'm chea--, er, eh, "FRUGAL" too and have looked into this in depth a couple of times!

We only have two 4-speed OD's that we can use!

The MOPAR A833 OD that was installed in some of the '80's GM P/U's.

And the Ford RUG Top-Loader OD!

Years ago, Ford put a 3-speed OD stick tranny behind their 1964 big car 390 engine that I personally know about and that I figure is heavy enough to withstand some of our lower powered BB's! (The 390 was like 300 and 330hp back then)..

GM had a h-d 3-speed too at one time but I don't remember if it was an OD or not?? Flat don't remember??

Do a search b/c the A833 OD has been discussed bigtime recently either here or over at Team Chevelle.
