After trying for a couple evenings trying to make some combo of shifter and rods, I have come to the conclusion that a 69 Z28 shifter will not work on my 68. It bolts on the tranny fine but 2nd and 4th hit the tunnel. I went back and did research on here and found that they were different. Could someone direct me to the site to purchase what I need to end this. Has anyone bought one of the aftermarket Muncie "Flop-O-Matic" 4 speed shifters? It's ashame I have 3 Hurst shifters with rods and I can't get one to work...bummer :clonk: Any help appreciated. Kevin

You want to start with the correct Hurst mount plate for 67-68
It is a large plate that uses the trans mount bolts on bottom and a U-bolt on back of trans.

The shifter body is the same 67-69
The chrome stick for 67-68 is different then 69

You can still get the Hurst installation kit with the rods, trans arms, mt plate
that will fit a 67-68 Muncie trans but if you have a 69 Muncie trans the arms will not fit from the 67-68 install kit

The stock Hurst installation does not work w/ a BB without spacing the shifter from the bracket for clearance.

I am not sure why a 69 shifter does not work on a 68. Same tunnel, same console.

Just so we are all on the same page, the transmission is the original 68 M-21
I had bought a 69 M-22 with the shifter when I first bought the car because it had a ST-10 in it. The car has always been owned by someone within 5 miles of me and I was lucky enough to find the transmission but not the rearend. Therefore, I have a 68 transmission with a 69 shifter. The shifter hits the tunnel in 2nd and 4th. I don't know what the difference is either but it just won't work. I could have modified a plate to get the shifter in the center of the tunnel hole, but then the rods were too long. Can I go to Hurst web site and purchase an install kit and use the shifter I have?

jegs and summit sell the install kits .
You may have some of the correct parts already and just may need to buy a few additional parts.

All the Hurst parts should have a number .
If you want to post all the numbers I can tell you which are correct for 67-68
the info is also on the Hurst web site

Funny, I'm installing a TKO in my '69 with console and was having problems with the 67/68 shifter (handle) hitting my console in 2nd/4th. Changed over to the '69 console insert and shifter handle and all is well. (That thread is over HERE (http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?p=830280))

Anyhow, as far as I can tell, the "correct" Hurst Comp plus shifter for a '69 Camaro is 3917438 (complete assembly), which is the 3914340 shifter (without stick) plus the 5387436 stick

For a 68, the complete assembly is 3914339, which is the same 3914340 shifter (without stick) plus the 5384106 stick.

(hurst part info HERE (http://www.hurst-shifters.com/catalogpdf/7-Service-Parts/SvcPts4.pdf))

You should be able to check for a part number on both the shifter assembly (stamped in the face) and the handle (last 4 digits stamped at the base of the handle).

If you've got the 3914340 shifter assembly, it's the "right" one and can be made to work with just the 4106 handle and the right mount kit (And if you don't have a console, the 7436 handle should work fine). According to Summit (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?CP=1&part=HUU-3734529&N=700%200&Ntt=HUU~3734529%20or%20HUU~3734531&Ntk=&rsview=sku&Ns=), the right install kit for a '68 with M21 is 3734529 (http://www.cardomain.com/item/HUR3734529). You can either order that up online or check out This Part List (http://www.hurst-shifters.com/catalogpdf/7-Service-Parts/SvcPts3.pdf) and compare to the individual parts you have. Not sure where to get individual parts though, so you may end up needing to get the whole kit anyway....

(For reference, the '69 install kit is listed as 3737437, looks like the mounting plate, all 3 shift arms, and some hardware are different between the two)

Actually, just checked and Summit does carry the individual parts, but the mount and 3 arms cost almost as much as the full install kit. Probably better off buying the kit and selling off the "69" kit you have on Ebay or something...

Picked up a Shifter for my 69 camaro trans to move the shifter in the middle for more room in my Gasser. I found this one at the NSRA show with P/N 3914340R.......is this the new Hurst Replacement Shifter? :noway:

IT looks to be in really good shape. So I thought it might be anew unit. Hurst ios using the 3914340 P/N in their catalog / publication.
