I have a 69 SS which came to me with no horns. I bought some horns last year but, after seeing a correctly restored 69 Ss last week I now know I have the wrong ones. I found a local guy who has a 69 Chevelle he is parting out and has some horns... are they the same?

P.S. - $20.00 --- is that a good deal and how can I check them out to see if they work?

You are looking for 289 and 290 horns, which are 69 and I think 70 F-body only. Search on here for 289, because it has been discussed, and there are pics of the correct ones.

Unless the Chevelle horns have been changed, they won't be correct. They might be close enough for you, and $20 for a pair is a deal if they work. Testing is simple; get a short length of wire (with a terminal on one end for best connection), connect it to the horn terminal and touch the other end to a positive battery terminal, then touch the horn bracket to the negative terminal. If it blows and is clear, it works. I have also used a battery charger to test.

Because of the limited application and the "desirability" of said application, I see 289 and 290 horns going for $100 a pair and up just for horns in need of resto. Restored ones go for more than $400.

I have been searching/agonizing on this for a year now. Mine (base 6 cyl/stick vert) came with a single horn, which I am 75% sure is OE. I have some "incorrect" horns that work, but every Carlisle or local meet I go to, I'm digging through everyone's rusty horns looking for those two numbers.

Call Gary at the The Horn Works 608-361-0095. I have used him and his work is fantastic and he might have on hand and since anything you find might need to be restored anyway.

Steve, I could not see the numbers on your horns. They may be correct. The mounting arms are bent down, that's all. They will starighten. If they are correct they can be rebuilt.
