: Trunk filler seams - a quandry

I'm stuck in a pickle.

My car is a driver, and although it has a few stone chips, the paint is pretty good.

One problem, though. When the car was painted by the PO, the trunk filler seams below the rear window were filled, and the have now begun to crack.

Although the cracks are kind of consistent with the stone chips, etc, they really bug me and I've been trying to come up with a way to fix them without having to repaint the panel or otherwise mess up what is otherwise a decent paint job. BTW it's a metalflake paint job, so feathering the new paint into the old isn't going to work.

Tell me whether this is totally crazy or within the realm of possibility:

I want to take a Dremel to the seams (taping off a straight line as a guide), then use a detail brush to prime and paint the exposed area.

Once it is painted and dry (I'll probably touch up some of the chips, too), I'll color sand the whole car, and give it a good polish. (It still hasn't been done since the new paint 2 years ago).

Think this will work or should I just leave it?

Hi.Depends how much the cracks are bugging you.Id practice with the dremel on something else to see how good you can groove a line first.Brushing metalflake is pretty scary but because its in a groove it may look passable.Ideally as you know it would be ideal to get it fixed properly. Also be aware when color sanding and buffing metalflake it has to have alot of clear over the flake to bury it.If it hasnt got enough clear on it you will run into major problems.

If you are going to dremel it,Take a piece of metal that you could lay on top, cut a groove and use as a guide. Would keep the dremel from hopping around.

Can you post a pic of the seams? Are you saying the seams have body filler in them (which they should not for a coupe) and you want to get the filler out?

I think a dremel or any kind of rotary tool is a bad idea. I'd tape it good and try gently chipping the filler out with a cold chisel, but we should probaly see what you're working with first.

Leave it unless you have it professionally done. If the cracks bother you now then it will probably bother you more after your repair. I doubt the paint will brush in and blend with the existing. It will show where you worked it.
