: windshield / dash decision time

I just got the wipers and cowl vent panel off, and it seems I've reached a decision point.

Previous owner painted the dash body color, a non-stock Metalic medium Blue. The dash should be black to match the interior.

If I change the color back to the original Lemans Blue (which I think I like better, but a color change is a LOT of extra work) I would also have to repaint the dash (in black) and therefore, I'd have to pull the windshield off. As long as the windshield is off, I'd replace it, it has so many little sctratched and pits I can hardly see to drive if the sun's wrong.

So, should go with the color change, or not?

And if I do, how do I get the trim off the windshield without hurting it? The lower peice is kinda loose now that the cowl vent is off. Hanging below it, I can see six (new looking) tabs, with 6 (new-non original looking) screws. Also, on each side, 8 1/" from each end, a tab (looks old, with phillips screw, also old)The trim itself is all oringinal, except for the top peices that meet the ragtop.

We're snowballing again, do I want to do this?

If you don't do the color change now, when will you ever do it?

Just something to think about if you really want to have it Lemans Blue...

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

I agree with Donald, As far as removing the trim, I would recommend getting the trim removal tool from Eastwood, or Classic, etc. I've heard of people getting by with a screwdriver or similar tool, but it is NOT recommended. IMO.

You dont want to chance breaking the glass or damaging the trim. Of course if you replace the windshield I guess breaking it isn't an issue.

If you're not comfortable with removing the trim and windshield I'd just call up a glass place and have them come out and remove it. Especially if you're buying new glass...they will probably do it for the cost of the new glass. I.e. no extra charge.

I've never bought the correct tool but every so often I'll bugger up some trim just because of that...it's cheap compared to new trim (luckily everything I've damaged has been going into the recycle bin anyway.) A screwdriver isn't the best way to go but it'll work if you're patient...most of the time. Your local parts store probably carries a cheap one that'll work fine.

Jim, my car is LeMans Blue and I love it smile.gif

I think for safety reasons, you should change the windshield. Mine is in the same condition. And, once the windshield is out, paint the dash. In my case, the dash will have to be repaired so consider your snowballing not so bad!

I think you should do it once, right!! Regardless of the exterior color you decide on, you should do the dash black.

If you decide to do the dash, remember there are two colors for it. A semigloss front, and non-glare top. The top is the same color with a texturizer, a flattener, and some blue-green added. Do a search about 2 years ago.... the Ditzler color codes are listed.
