I'm getting close to ordering a t.c. for my 91 Camaro w/a 700R4. My engine is a 355 w/ XE268 cam w/ 1.6 r.r. and ~10.5:1CR. My gears are 2.73's currently but I plan on upgrading to a 3.73 on down the road. This will be a weekend toy mainly. I was thinking a 2000-2200 stall would be best. I would like to go fairly cheap and keep the lock up. I've been considering a Tork Master or TCI Breakaway. Are there any other decently priced converters out there for a 700R4?

For sure..but they will need to know your current combo vs down the road mods.I would suggest that you spend the coin on the rear gear swap that you want to live with and then match the converter to suit that.Anything less will have you buying a 2nd converter and selling a good tc for 10 cents on the dollar. When you stab in the 3.73 with a 700r4..a 10 inch 3k from Hughes with the lockup feature is affordable at under $500 and very streetable with a good cooler.I have a 12 inch B&M 2400 Holeshot on the bench that I will not sell to anyone or give away for that fact.It is headed to the recycling steel trash where it belongs. My 10 "Hughes 3500 flashes exactly as advertised out of the box.

The pricing is nice Rusty..but I have never used their product.I have purchased from TCI,b&m,and Hughes to date only.I can only say that TCI trans and the Hughes converter delivered as advertised out of the box.Hopefully..someone will chime in that has dealt with Monster first hand and can assist you further.:beers:

Another website I browse has basically said they are junk, but I've since been looking hard at Bowtie Overdrives torque converter.

When I bought my BTO Level 2 200-4R Transmission I bought the $175 BTO HD2200 stall converter as they had recommended for my 3.73 rear/327 XE262 Nova. They sent a nicely built PTC Torque Converter. I installed everything per their instructions and the transmission and torque converter have been wonderful.

You're on the right track at 2200 rpm since this is an overdrive application--even with 3.73 gears. Maybe 2500 rpm with 3.73 gears. Either way, stay on the conservative side due to overdrive. Biggest problem I see is the 2.73 gears and overdrive. Your revs will be very low under 70 mph in overdrive. So try to do the gear swap at the same time. If that's not possible, you'll probably end up driving around in 3rd gear (1:1) until the gear swap.
