View Full Version : Coated my floor today
MY FIRST 69 Jun 15th, 04, 05:49 AM Hey all. I was looking for a quick and cheap way of coating the floor of the 69. I was going to go with the POR route but decided not to because of all of the prep work. The floors of my car were solid and still had the factory paint on them. I went over them with a scotch brite pad and then vacumed up as much dust and dirt as I could. I went to kragen and picked up some dupli color roll on truck bed liner that comes in a one quart can. I came home and tested it on different areas of the floor and checked it in the morning. The stuff dried rock hard and smooth to the touch so I went ahead and rolled the stuff out all over the floor. I am waiting for it to dry as I type. I am impressed with the way it looks. I ran out and need to buy some more so I can cut in the edges and get around the wire loom area. After I am finished I will post some pics. Also, my car is almost ready for primer! all of the body work is done, just need minor sanding and to the paint booth it goes!

68ragtop Jun 15th, 04, 07:26 AM sounds good,
how about the heat from the exhaust pipes if they run close to the floor (especially with exhaust headers) ... beware of noxious fumes...
just a thought
jackr Jun 15th, 04, 07:49 AM Did you get any "fish eyes" in the paint ? Not that it would matter on the floor but, I learned that scotchbrite leaves a residue.
Without washing the scotch brite residue with Tide detergent, my 67 interior paint on the doors had fisheyes that I could not get rid of. The guy at the paint store clued me in to the Tide detergent trick.
MY FIRST 69 Jun 15th, 04, 09:46 AM So far so good. I used some ruberized under coat spray for the edges and areas that I could not get too like in the trunk and on the back side of the firewall. The bed liner dries in no time at all I have to roll it on in a hurry before it dries in the pan. This stuff smells really bad, Im sure I killed more then a few brain cells laying it down. I am wating for the trunk to dry and I will post pictures.

KevinImh Jun 15th, 04, 10:45 AM Good job, looks great graemlins/beers.gif . That’s what I plan on doing to my 67 RS. I’m not worried about originality, just rust. I know after I’m done with the restoration, the Camaro will never rust; if my welds are bad, hopefully the roll-on-bedliner coating/ POR15/ powder coating will hold things together. My Uncle did the bedliner on his 68 RS and hasn’t had a problem with it (he’s pushing 520 hp; I’m sure things gets hot). He finished his car about 2 years ago and recently took 1st place in a car show  (Muscle Car category) last week.
Good job, keep it up.
jethro Jun 15th, 04, 01:41 PM That looks pretty darn good!!!!
gwbutch Jun 15th, 04, 08:41 PM Yes, that does look good. I have a question though (sorry to get off topic). In the first photo, what is the hole in the transmission hump for? I had that hole in mine, but it was in pretty rough shape and it wasn't being used for anything, so I put a patch over it.

MY FIRST 69 Jun 15th, 04, 10:03 PM My car was an automatic. The big hole is where the shifter cable exits the interior. I need to fill them and I still have to cut the floor for my 4 speed swap.
gwbutch Jun 16th, 04, 05:16 AM Ahhhhhh, that makes sense. graemlins/clonk.gif My car was an auto also (a long time ago), but I won't need it with the new Tremec 600. :D Thanks.

click Jun 16th, 04, 05:19 AM Great job graemlins/thumbsup.gif wasnt that fun cleaning the floors up before your coating?
I painted with POR gray then a layer of the sound / heat deadener then my new carpet. It even 'feels' better :D
MY FIRST 69 Jun 16th, 04, 09:15 AM yeah, what a mess. Someone in the past went crazy with the carpet glue. I had to scotch brite the whole floor just to remove the glue and fuzz. I had a few bare metal areas but I figured it would be fine with the coating. Lets see how pretty it looks after block sanding the body, hope most of it will vacume up.
HwyStarJoe Jun 16th, 04, 09:49 AM Tape and mask off the entire interior.
It'll take 3 minutes to pull the tape\masking paper out. It'll take 3 hours to clean!
