: Floor board finishing help, please
Eric Kammerer Jun 18th, 04, 01:44 PM Hi all! My new floor board sections are in, and I need some opinions on the underside finishing.
The driver side was replaced from the toe board to an inch or so in front of the under seat reinforcement (car is a 'vert, and under the welded "X" looked too decent to go through cutting it all out and then putting it back in). So, I have a seam I need to deal with.
Car will never be a show car, but I'd like it to be tight and solid. Everything will be undercoated after I am finished, with black epoxy over the undercoat to help keep it clean.
Would you all ever consider using a body filler like Evercoat Metal 2 Metal on a floor underside? Or should I just brush on seam seal it and be done with it?
TIA!
choptop Jun 18th, 04, 05:50 PM I'm in the same boat with my coupe. Not quite finished replacing the pans yet, but will be soon (I hope). My plan is to fill any seams with sealer, either brushed on or with a caulking gun. Any body filler like material might crack out if there is any flexing.
aonghus Jun 18th, 04, 05:58 PM what kind of caulking should one use to fill up the seams? i just spent a couple hours digging out all the black rubberized caulk, applied my POR...
should i be that concerned with the seams ? i was considering leaving them empty, as i live in just about the dryest city in socal... lol
choptop Jun 19th, 04, 03:18 AM I'll be using a 3M brand flexible seam sealer. It can be purchased at most any good autobody supply store and comes in a caulking gun tube(got mine at Carquest autobody/ paint). I just hope I don't have to buy a special 3M caulking gun to use it. Looks like a regular size caulking cartridge to me anyway.
HwyStarJoe Jun 19th, 04, 05:44 AM You're right Scott.... any gun will work. At least it did for me.
spideynut Jun 20th, 04, 08:55 PM I just got done with my floors too. I used brushable seam sealer on top of the weld seams and bottom. then went over the underside only with a roll-on bedliner. It came out real nice.
Before I started this job, I thought maybe just a patch here and there. To fix the floors But im so glad I decided to go with new pans. I cant believe how solid they are. And how the end result even thought you can see the seams under the car it doesnt really matter cause there is NO MORE RUST on my floors. ZERO and the only way to have done it is get the die grinder out and thrash away. OR buy a different car.....
KURT Jun 21st, 04, 11:26 AM I butt welded mine in and used evercoat polyester filler to finish the seams off. Looks great will hold up fine. I finsidhed the hole underside off with "POR 15". I followed their directions and even lightly blasted the new floors. I cleaned them with their cleaner and about 2 weeks later I was able to peel the POR off in sheets. Caused alot of extra work for me. I would not recommend using the POR on anything but rusty metal. seems to stick well to that.
Eric Kammerer Jun 23rd, 04, 05:15 PM Yeah, I've heard enough horror stories about POR on new metal that I wouldn't go that route. I am still working on getting as much of the factory undercoat off as I can, and then I plan to self-etch prime everything, seal/fill seams, re-undercoat, and then black epoxy paint everything. I live about 25 minutes from Eastwood, so I mostly use their products (though I was not thrilled with their Bloxide weld through primer).
Thanks for all the replies!
beeskerdog Jun 24th, 04, 02:22 PM Eric,
What's up with the Bloxide primer? No good, what happened? Which is a good weld thru?
thanks, Beesker
