I keep seeing people refer to rolling the lip of the 1/4s. Sorry to have to ask, but what is this and how do you do it?

I have 17 X 7's front and 17 X 8's rear TT's on my 69 and have tire rub on the front on hard turns or big bumps. don't know the back space. But wondered if "rolling the lip" was something that would help.

BTW, on the front springs, there are lifters that I would LOVE to get rid of as it makes the front sit too high. I assume that was done for tire clearance by the previous owner.

"rolling the lip" is something most often done in the back. The "lip" of the fender, the part in the opening that sticks "inward" where the fender and inner fender meet and are welded together, is sliced like a pie, then hammered up flat against the fender. This gives maybe 3/4" of additional tire clearance.

I did this to the front of a heavily lowered 67 once tho. In addition to flattening the lip, the process also involved cutting a wedge 4" wide by maybe 18" long out of the top outer portion of the inner fenders. This car fit 245-60-14's with only minor rubber on the frame rail behind the tire, at a full lock turn.

What size tires are you running, and what's the backspace of your rim's?
With proper backspace, virtually any tire recommended for a 7" rim (up to a 245 cross-section) should fit on the front of a 69, even down in the weeds.

Hows your alignment, and what condition is your suspension in?

Tires are 245/45's on the front and 255/50's on the back. Suspension is okay, definetly not new. don't know the backspace, I'm going to try to pull the wheels and figure that out this weekend.

What backspace generally works on the 69 fronts?

For a 7" wide wheel a 4" backspace usually fits well. I have that on the front with 225 wide tires and have no rubbing issues. It is tight in there and a wider tire might rub.

Okay, if I am measuring right, it looks like my fronts are 3 3/4" backspace.

If the 4" backspace works, but tight, would it be better to go a little deeper? At what point do you start having issues turning and rubbing?
