View Full Version : See the USA in your Chevrolet "2008"
JimM Aug 31st, 07, 08:03 PM Start planning that next cruise would you jim . This one went way to fast for me. Mark.
We've been talking some, but nothing for sure yet.
What I'd like to do is a "family vacation" in or near Yellowstone or some other cool place to be thought of later. A full week there, for those who want to do that, and opportunities for other to join us for a day or 2, perhaps some sort of big event set up on one of the days.
I've talked to Carol some, about the prospect of taking brian (10) and leaving the other 2 home. She seems to think they will destroy our home while we're gone! Maybe I'll just talk her into driving the family truckster, if she can keep up with me.
I would eat that pizza again if that meant hanging out with the rest of the guys (and girls) like last time. It was bad but, like Mark said the memories and fun we had far out weighs the Pizza, it's just fun talking about how bad it was. Not Gary's fault but, what the heck let's blame it on him anyway, LOL.
Is your new ride gonna be done next summer Royce?
Will your family fit in it?

Jim,
Only been over that way a couple times this summer. I'll try and find some maps, materials, etc. on Yellowstone if you're interested. Have to do some digging in the map pockets of vehicles and see if I have anything remotely current / up to date. If I find them I'll PM you. If not, I'll probably be doing a day trip in the Park towards the end of Sept. and I'll get some for you then. The wife has "gently" reminded me of our anniversary then.:)
camaroman7d Sep 1st, 07, 02:12 PM Jim,
I plan on having the car done by next summer. While it is still in a bunch of pieces, I have everything I need to finish it. Body and paint are the hold-up, I will get back on it soon (the bike is almost done). Yes, my family will fit but, my son has grown a BUNCH since I planned out the rear seat section and I doubt he could take much more than 45 minutes to an hour crunched up back there. That won't stop me from making a trip (he just will get left behind, LOL). Depending on when and where the trip is, will determine who goes along for the ride (or who wants to). I will have the car running and moving under it's own power in the next couple of months. If it comes down to it I will drive it done or not. I don't plan to miss many more events and have been dragging my feet long enough on this build (should have been done over a year ago).
JimM Sep 1st, 07, 03:48 PM I don't plan to miss many more events and have been dragging my feet long enough on this build (should have been done over a year ago).
That's good to hear, Royce. I enjoyed the heck out of meeting you (and the rest of the west coast gang!) and am looking forward to the next time we all can get together!

John, what we really need is some "unobtainium."
A resort that wants to do a car show!
There's a place a bit west of the south entrance to the park, don't remember the name, but it was a weird one, and it's the only thing that close. Wonder if they'd work with us?
Jim and All - between eyelid closings last night I was channel surfing and stopped on Rachel Ray's $40 a day. She was in Jackson Hole WY which is on the south side of the Grand Tetons. Touristy but maybe not like the bus loads of camera toting folks hitting Yellowstone all summer.
Check this out, they have a 3 day air and classic car show in August each year... http://www.alpineairpark.com/airshow.html
Maybe they wouldn't mind a bunch of long haulers dropping in on them. Anyway just a thought, what peaked my interest on the show was the Microbrewery with $2.50 pints at happy hr... :beers:
johnmh Sep 1st, 07, 07:05 PM Guys
Only thing that quickly comes to mind is the Virginian Lodge in Jackson. www.virginianlodge.com They hold a car show in July. In conjunction with a local Idaho Goodguys bunch, I think. The motels right in Jackson. So pretty touristy / traffic / and such. For the show they allow cars to park in their enclosed grassy courtyard by the pool. So you can see your car from the room. Never stayed there so can't tell you what rooms are like. Not new or fancy but looks O.K. Keep in mind Jackson proper is about 30 mi. or so from the entrance to Teton Park. And Yellowstone S. entrance another (I'm guessing. Maps are in wife's Jeep which is in Billings this weekend) 25-30 mi. from there. That's before you drive ANYWHERE in the Park. And remember the Park's as big as some smaller eastern states. Speed limit of only 45, if you're not stuck behind a motorhome. Don't want to scare you off, but allow some time traveling in and out of the park if you stay in Jackson. Anyhow, don't want to hijack this thread. Let me know if I can somehow help.
JimM Sep 1st, 07, 07:26 PM I think it's time to start a new post for this. Dennis, in cruiseins or in bench?
This is the place I was thinking about, Flagg Ranch. http://www.flaggranch.com/index.html
It's right outside the south entrance to the park. We "Shopped" there, but didn't go there, were looking for larger family style accomodations. Also, the place is a LONG WAY from anywhere, except yellowstone.
Don't let John's 35 miles fool ya... 35 miles on these twisty 2 lanes is a LONG LONG way.
Jackson itself is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't wanna live there, It's a real city, and crowded in the summer.
When our family went west a few years ago, we stayed at Dornan's spur ranch cabins, in moose. http://www.dornans.com/ A small resort, but very nice, great cabins, food (both to buy and to get cooked for you) on the property, on the snake river, and less than 100 yard from the entrance to Grand Tetons Nat'l park. As a historical note, the Grand Teton mountains were first discovered and named by French exp[lorers. In French, Grand Tetons means "big tits." If you look at the pictures, you can see why. Truly spectacular.
johnmh Sep 1st, 07, 07:32 PM Of course you might be rewarded seeing some great wildlife. Taken in May. WITH a telephoto next to the pickup!!

I've collected some posts from another thread you have just read them if you are reading this. What is going on is we are looking into a summer Cruise where TC folks from all over converge on the same spot on the map at the same time. For the moment we will call it "See the USA in your Chevrolet" Think of it as a family vacation where you run into a bunch of friends. We have kinda been looking at northwest Wyoming but all ideas are wanted...
johnmh Sep 1st, 07, 09:03 PM Dennis - thanks for moving the thread. Was feeling a little guilty "stealing" space from Mark & Dan's trip. But didn't want to ignore Jim.
Jim - Ate at Dornan's around 1st of July. Friend of a friend has a 6 person raft. And we floated the Snake for 2 days that weekend. I remember walking into Dornan's right off the river 1st night, at supper time. The whole dining room literally stopped eating to stare at us. Apparently we were "baked" and pretty ragged looking from a fun day on and in the river! We had fun! :)
Another place to maybe consider - www.signalmountainlodge.com
I'm stopping for now. Others can chime in.

JimM Sep 1st, 07, 09:21 PM I'm gonna step back too. Let's hear some suggestions from everyone else. Where would you go? How long would you stay? Do you want to do a car show, or just hang out?
If I run some miles from people I know will want to go, it looks like this:
Chicago to Vancouver: 2235
brainerd. mn to san fransisco, ca 1930
If you draw those 2 lines on a map, we'll go to where they intersect. That place should be pretty central for anyone west of the mississippi
Mark .L.W. Sep 1st, 07, 11:18 PM I like the show Dennis was talking about , then some sightseeing , and then a couple of days just laying around pool telling story's , and eating crappy pizza . Now that's a holiday .to top it all off we can rip somebody's camaro apart and work on it , or do Royce's body and paint LoL ! .
Mark.
JimM Sep 2nd, 07, 06:33 AM The alpine show Dennis posted looks very cool, but the dates would NOT work. That's the week my kids go back to school!
click Sep 2nd, 07, 09:23 AM Dennis, I saw that exact same show, that gal found super deals on meals and the town sure is touristy. I'd expect hotels to be expensive tho. Any show out west that we might consider would be a 2 day type event for us, then we'd have to hit the road. We have relatives in Reno and LA and other places we'd like to see on a long trip. Sue and I figured, once we got as far as Wyoming, why go home again? We are half way to other places we want to visit. We'd hit Reno, then Vallejo CA, then LA, then Scottsdale AZ, then Denver, then Omaha then home. For us, its making the best use of the time and miles driven. No sense in a hop to WY, then turn around and head home. Too much cool stuff to see out there.
We'd also love to consider a trek East, maybe Bowling Green Corvette plant tour. That also would be a trip to stop and visit relatives in KY and Chicago area on the way.
Just more ideas.
If someone in WY wants to call the Chev dealer in Jackson WY and see if they'd sponsor a car show like Menholt Chev did in Billings, that would help bring some focus to a plan IF IF IF it ends up the majority of folks will go to Jackson. Say hallo to my leetle friend:

I just bought a trailer, so I could load up the rotisserie and a Camaro on one, and pick up a paint booth to bring on my big flatbed trailer. We could finish up Royce's in quick order and do a frame off on mine. I'll tow the paint booth behind the truck and get the wife to tow the other trailer behind the minivan.
Seriously, I talked to the wife about it and she nixed the idea of driving the Camaro for any length of time for a vacation. She may not be opposed to the idea of going, and maybe even towing the Camaro behind, but "no way" if we just drive the car. No AC, no room to load twelve dozen suitcases, etc. When we go to Tahoe for a 3 or 4 day trip we have to take the back seat out of the minivan and load the Yakima storage shell on top. I can get by with a duffle bag and an extra pair of shoes, but my wife and 2 girls seem to need a ocean cargo-container to hold their stuff. Our last "camping" trip consisted of driving a motor home up the coast, spending one night in it at a campground, and the rest of the nights in motels. Too bad they didn't make Camaro SUV's back in the day.... I'd just go pick one of those up and we'd be good to go

I can give them a call on Tues. What exactly would they have to provide besides parking, access to restrooms,??
click Sep 2nd, 07, 03:08 PM John that would be their option, anything and everything is open to discussion. Trophys, advertising, charity tie in if they want, gas grille for the motel for 'benching' afterwards, goodie bags... etc. I think the first question would be, have they done car shows before, would they visit with us about one next summer. Then we can get into the chit chat of what they might feel like doing. :)
johnmh Sep 2nd, 07, 05:35 PM I'll try and touch base with their Gen. Manager tues. and see how receptive they are. I don't know anyone at that dealership.
Too bad the one I work for here in my little town is 3 hrs. from Jackson.

I am sitting here reading this and thinking what it would be like to drive the Z to Wyoming. 3.73s and all. I know it has been done a bunch of times in years past. At 14 MPG, $3 per gallon and 1050 miles it is only $450 round trip. I'm thinking I have a hard sell to the wife on this one also.
First things first. I need to take it dreamweaver's and back next month. A grand total of 1500 miles in 2 years so far.

http://www.rocknrod.com/states/wyoming.htm (http://www.rocknrod.com/states/wyoming.htm)
I hope whatever we settle on isn't too late as my kids start school about August 15.
Mark .L.W. Sep 3rd, 07, 11:17 PM Early august is the best for us . There are a bunch of shows around that area . That yellowstone cruise could be fun .
Mark.
A few things to keep in mind:
1. We don't have to have a car show at the destination. Hotel parking lots can provide just as much opportunity for socializing...
2. Trunk space is only limited by how many days of driving you do to get there. We have shipped additional clothing to the destination Hotel many times.
3. Spouses can fly if necessary and a local buddy (TC member) whos car is not up for the distance can ride shotgun. With gas prices and splitting a hotel room until you reach the destination the cost of a flight might be a wash!
Keep it coming folks... :beers:
JimM Sep 4th, 07, 10:56 AM Dennis, yer a freeking genious!
I can fly the wife and boys out!
Problem solved.
click Sep 4th, 07, 12:46 PM Fly me out too? :D

I watching this post, I would love to go but will have to do major reconstruction of the 67 before it happens. It would be great to get it finished up to go.
Throwing out a possible location Branson Mo. It's in the Ozarks and boy is it pretty there. Lake abound and cabin rentals are avaible. I want to say in July or Aug they have a big cruise and car show. Not sure about dates though. Maybe someone knows more about it that I do.

johnmh Sep 4th, 07, 01:55 PM Just an update on Jackson Hole. I just called Teton Motors and was told I probably should talk with the owner. Was transferred to his extension and left a message with my W. & H. numbers. I'll wait for him to hopefully contact me today.
Mark .L.W. Sep 4th, 07, 05:58 PM I really don't care for driving all that distance and then doing a car show . We had more fun at the hotel after it was all over , working on our cars , swimming , shooting the breeze . Jim we need to get a hotel like the one we had , get a few more couples to all stay in the same area , have a BBQ , let the kids all swim . We had a ton of fun coming back up the coast , letting the kids poke around the beach , go for walks and talk it was great . Driving the cars there is a show in it's self . Now if we can just make sure Danno can get clam chowder when we stop to eat he may come with us .
Mark.
Mark we can take care of the Clam Chowder for Dan, All we need to do is wire a can of his favorite brand to each header. It will always be ready for him at every stop... :D
Mark .L.W. Sep 4th, 07, 07:22 PM That should work Dennis . I will get started on a holder .

You know Mark, I'm kind of with you on that one. Probably because my car is a 20 footer and I really get more of a kick out of driving it somewhere than showing it.
We had every intention of looking you up in June while we were up in Victoria. Daughter wanted to show us her "summertime home" in Parksville. But with her Jeep dying (PCM) and the unexpected tow home. It put a real crimp in our schedule. Never did get up island. Maybe another time.
Still waiting on a reply from Teton Motors. Although I didn't get to make the call to them till after 1:30 pm today.
Mark .L.W. Sep 4th, 07, 08:38 PM John you are welcome anytime . I just find driving all that way to go for a show just took the fun out of the trip . We had more fun talking to poeple at the hotels , well ok dan had more fun talking to Habibe and his german buddy . I just want to relax swim eat to much and talk a bit about cars , maybe a bit of polishing . Also Shelby misses JimM .

Aaaawwww, what a sweety. Tell her I miss her too, and I'll see her next summer!
I'm with you on the (lack of) car show, Mark. I would happily spent a week in that place in San Mateo with you guys, lounging by the pool, going for drives to see the sites, BSing in the parking lot...
Mark, I'm gonna call yer cel tomorrow, too late now, I'm goin to bed!

Yeah, next time you come down here...spend more time...you missed out on about 99% of the things to do or see in the Bay Area... The wife and I can be the tour guides... Heck you didn't even visit the castro district, to stop in for a few drinks...;) Oh well, next time, it will give you something to look forward too...BTW, Thats where I'm taking Buck when he comes out here next week..;)
MrDanB Sep 5th, 07, 11:33 AM I really enjoyed the run down to California, meeting everyone, sightseeing etc. The only thing that bothered me at all was the loading and unloading every single day and some of the motels were sub par by almost anyones standards  i'm not too sure I could talk Lily into another long run in the Camaro. Flying her to the destination might work, but looks like a long shot at this point. She was talking about taking the motorhome out for a while next year, or a cruise ship to Mexico, or flying to San Diego to hang out with her family (that's a whole other adventure :D) Anyway, lots can happen between now and then. Worst case, we'll have to wait 'till "next time"... BTW Mark, the lack of biscuits and gravy really deeply saddened me :D
Dano:beers:

johnmh Sep 5th, 07, 06:12 PM I spoke to the gentleman who owns Teton Motors in Jackson Hole this afternoon. He seemed receptive to the idea of hosting a T.C. event. He had some questions, naturally. And would be glad to talk with someone in more depth about it. It doesn't seem like they have held a show at that dealership before. But like I said, he seemed receptive to the idea.
Can I PM someone with my home or work phone? Probably be easier and quicker letting you know what was said.

blue ss Sep 6th, 07, 06:38 AM Sounds intresting guys, I remember in 81 I took a trip there and around 12000 ft. I turned the car off (it was new at the time) , It would not start due to altitude after some time of cooling I push started it . It only started at the bottom of the hill I was on just in time. It does bother me a bit taking the 67 to the same local without a map sensor. I guess we change jets in denver ha Jim? I bet my family could do the trip we are used to long hauls in the camaro. Just have to stop a alot to do laundry, The wifes suit cases make me go on trips like that with only the cloths on my back.
click Sep 6th, 07, 08:22 AM johnMH thanks for making the contact. Lets see what the guys here end up prefering before we go into any detail on a location or event or not.

Thanks. Just wanted to be sure.

JimM Sep 6th, 07, 06:51 PM I'm gonna start shopping "hotel / resort" locations in or near Yellowstone, see what can meet our needs. Particularly in yellowstone, bookings need to be made VERY early, as they fill up. "near Yellowstone" is some VERY wild country, but there are some dozen resorts and hotels in the park, ranging from campgrounds to 5 star.
I'm thinking we need cabins or 1 and 2 BR suites.
Laundry facilities.
Pool & Hot Tub
Food.
It's pretty hard to order a pizza inside Yellowstone, the nearest carryout in any direction is an hour drive or more.
An airport would be nice, I'll have to fly at least half my family in.
Fair warning, that type of accomodation inside Yallowstone is gonna run $150 to $300 per DAY!

Wife came home tonight and told me she booked an overnight at the Yellowstone Lake Hotel on the 22nd for our anniv. Eaten in the dining room couple of times through the years. But never stayed in the hotel proper. Nice older bldg. overlooking gorgeous Yellowstone Lake. I've stayed in the cabins behind the hotel before. They are pretty basic, clean / but not very luxurious.
You aren't going to find any pools or hot tubs inside Teton or Yellowstone parks that I'm aware off. Accomodations inside the park are going to be nice but not 5 star fancy.
Try this for places to stay inside the park.
http://www.travelyellowstone.com/static/66.htm
I don't stay in Jackson proper very often. But have stayed at Cowboy Village http://www.townsquareinns.com/cowboy-village/ Nice cabins. Small pool. Hot tubs next to the pool. Lousy speed bumps in the driveway.
Let me know what you find. Maybe I've seen it or been by it at some time.

Snake river lodge in teton village, has a pool http://www.gtlc.com/lodgeSRLS.aspx
We've been to Teton Village. (not to stay, just a visit) they have an tram to the top of rendevous mountain, had some sort of indian show going on the day we were there. It's a HUGE condo development, lots of shops, resturants, etc.
Both are in Jackson.
Jackxson Lake Lodge is further North, out of town, closer to yellowstone, also has a pool http://www.gtlc.com/lodgeJac.aspx
I kinda like this one. It's nearly half way between jackson and the south entrance to yellowstone.
eville Sep 27th, 07, 11:13 PM When are we thinking? It's a 14 hour haul for me... Elko, NV splits it down the middle.
I'll get the TKO in next weekend. Then I need MPFI. I'd like to get 18-20 MPG.
Anyone else from my neck of the woods want to caravan?
dreamweaver Sep 28th, 07, 12:07 AM Depending on when it is I am planning on going..... I wouldn't go unless there was a caravan. Could you imagine me on a 2000 mile trek on my own. I could drag some tools along, but what would I do with them if I broke down. I'll bring bailing wire, bottles of water, and Steve and John... that should be all I need :D
johnmh Sep 28th, 07, 08:53 AM Never stayed at the Jackson Lake Lodge but wife & I have eaten at the Mural Room dining area. Huge floor to ceiling windows with views of the Tetons. Nice. You will be much closer to the parks there than in Jackson / Teton Village.
We were in Yellowstone this past weekend. Overnighted at the Yellowstone Lake Hotel for our anniv. Another nice dining area and sunroom with huge windows overlooking the lake. Somewhat pricey, but nice area to dine with the wife.
I know I've said this before - but if everyone decides to come out here, be aware of the time it takes to travel into and around the park. The speed limit is only 45 mph in the parks. And you are lucky to go that speed for any length of time, especially in the summer tourist season. Just allow some time to see the sights and get back to Jackson Hole or wherever.
johnmh Sep 28th, 07, 09:03 AM Cloudy, rainy, wet snow weather last weekend over there. But still the Tetons are impressive.

JimM Sep 28th, 07, 08:20 PM Like John said, the time factor out there is worth noting. When we went there on vacation, our last night stop was in Cody, just over en hour from the east entrance into Yellowstone. It took us a good 6 hours to get from Cody, thru yellowstone, and south to our cabin, which was still a good distance north of Jackson.
Remember Beartooth pass!
joe clance Oct 23rd, 07, 09:06 PM Is there an itinerary or a series of planned events for TC members for this cruise? I'm tossing the idea of going but would be more inclined if there were a series or a large event to the cruise.
kausboy Nov 1st, 07, 01:54 PM This is looking like a fun trip with a fantastic destination!! If it gets planned early enough my family and I may actually be able to attend!! I will be following this thread closely!! I have a good friend that lives in Dubois that I would love to see.
Cameromike Dec 14th, 07, 12:18 PM We go to The West Yellowstone Rod Run in West Yellowstone,Montana. It is a resort town right at the west entrance to Yellowstone Park. They have it the first weekend of Aug. every year. It is the oldest rod run in the northwest ( 37 years in 08'). It is a 3 day show( Fri,Sat ans Sun ) Includes a cruise thru the west gate of the park ending at a Hot Rod BBQ on Sat. nite. They normaly have over 500 cars show up. The lodging is anywhere from $60 to $150 per nite. It draws people from all over and they start showing up on the Mon. before and do the tourist thing. We also do the Top Of The Rockies Show in Alpine, WY at the end of Aug. It is a smaller event but is also a pretty good drive out of Yellowstone. I have also done the Jackson Hole show. It was alot of fun. We stay at the Virginian Hotel. The prices in Jackson Hole are on the high side and it is also a good drive to get to Yellowstone for sightseeing. There are alot of car events in and around Yellowstone Park at the end of July and thru Aug.( peak tourist season)
