I ordered everything I thought I needed to plumb in my fuel regulator and pressure gauge. I'm putting in all new stainless braided hoses from pump to carb and I'm using Earls AN fittings. I e-mailed the good folks there at Earls and asked what fitting I needed to go from the fuel Pump and into a AN fitting, his answer "youll have to fiugure that one out yourself".

Well I cant figure it out myself. I cant get on a plane and fly to Lawndale Ca, take a SBC fuel pump into his store and try to make something work. Can anyone tell me if part # 991947 is what I need? http://www.anplumbing.com/shop/index.php?shop=&dept=Aluminum

They probably said that because they don't know what fuel pump you have..

I'm sure there are a lot of SBC pumps. Do you know the thread ID on the pump?"

I dont know exactly. 3/8 is what I would guess. I told him I had a 69 Camaro with mechanical pump. How many aftermarket fuel pumps with different sized fitings can there be?

Several... stock pumps have a non-removeable 45 degree flare on the output, and non remoceable 3/8 or 5/16 tube on the inlet. You won't adapt this to AN without a big fight.

Most "street/strip" aftermarket pumps have 3/8" female pipe thread.
Many "race" pumps will have larger fittings.

Suggestion: If you have a stock pump, buy a holley or edelbrock street strip pump with 3/8" fittings.

If you all ready have an aftermarket pump, go to a hardware store and buy a 3/8" and a 1/2" male pipe fitting, and see hwich one screws into the hole.

Do you have the pump already? If so then it's no sweat. If not you need to wait until you do have it before you order your AN fittings. There is no way the guy could tell you what fitting you need. Remember his business is fittings, he might not even own an old/classic car.

With that said I would do as Jim said unless you have a tap set with a 3/8" pipe tap. My guess is it will be a 3/8" NPT (national pipe thread) female.

Do you know the part number of the fuel pump and who makes it? If so look it up and it should list the specs on all the fittings.

Stock fuel pump (or stock type aftermarket) have 3/8" NPT female at the pump. Just get a 3/8" npt male / -6 AN (if you are using -6) male --> in your sample link - 981666. The fitting you are showing (991947) would be a fitting that would go inside the Holley carb fuel inlet(s) then out to a -6AN. I have spent a LOT of time with fittings over the last two weeks.

Thank you Strick, I think you cracked the code. I'll let you know when I get this resolved.

most stock pumps I've seen use inverted flare fittings, not NPT. Most all aftermarket pumps use NPT with 3/8 being the most popular; however, I've also had 1/4 npt and 1/2 npt on aftermarket pumps. The 1/4npt was on the older Carter and similar replacement pumps and the race pumps can get 1/2 npt. 3/8 is the most common, but if it's a stock pump it's probably inverted flare.

If it's an inverted flare, then it would most likely be a 5/8-18in. But my current Holley pump, and prior Edelbrocks was 3/8 NPT. I will check the stock pump I have in my '56 Chevy (350 SBC)when I get home (if I remember) to see what is in there.

When I bought a new replacement OEM 3/8" fuel line for my Camaro it had double flared lines, so I would guess even stock it goes into a barbed fitting. I will check that as well on my stock 6 cylinder in my garage.

FWIW, a Summit 5/8-18 in. / -6 AN ( SUM-220667) fitting is $4.00-$5.00 - but I don't think this is the one you need. Also the part # for 3/8" NPT / -6 AN is SUM-220648 --> I think this is the one you need.

I was looking through my links. I found this one which is a link to a 7.5MB pdf catalog. There is some general how-to info in the front which you may find useful. http://russellperformance.com/new/dl/07_russell_auto_cat.pdf

The 350 in my '56 has a double flare tube coming out to the Inlet side of the fuel pump, and a 5/8-18 in. on the outlet side (that feeds the carb). The 250 6-cyl has exactly the same set-up, however the outlet side is a smaller fitting which is seated into a coupler. I not going to remove and measure.

I have found you really need to become a student of fittings. There are VERY VERY few parts people out there who know much about them. I am getting closer and closer to understanding them.

Thanks for the feedback..I can go to my local hardware store but all they have is metric (I live in Germany), thus my dilemma. I have to say its 5/8 18. Prior to me messing around and changing over to braided lines, it had the original single fuel line from the Stock/OEM fuel pump going up to the Rochester. That line was 3/8 pipe with a male flared fitting, (which I think is 5/8 18) and that fitting went right into the pump.
Sooo. Does anyone agree that the part number from Earls I mentioned earlier is the one which will get me connected? It looks like it's what I need. Thanks.

Your part number is right the -------147 for a 5/8-18 and my part number is right for a 3/8" NPT ----------666. I wouldn't order one and hope you are right. If are not comfortable with these fittings yet, I would order both.

What fuel pump do you have?
