View Full Version : Help, broken distributor, now what?
68327camaro Sep 5th, 07, 05:33 AM ok. distributor would not come out. i had posted previously, and had plenty of suggestions, of which the slide hammer had the most effect. now how do i get this out of my block? I have wd40ed the crap out of what is left...upper part broke off, small amount of distributor body sticking out of block, shaft still in tact. THANKS for all of your help, this simple job has now expanded into weeks!!!!!!

GreyShadows Sep 5th, 07, 06:08 AM hmmm wow I have never seen that before... hmmm... I'm thinking that you might want to try some heat.. An Acetylene torch heating the block around what is left of the distributor... than you will need to pull on the shaft with something with more leverage than your arms can muster ... of course i assume you have already tried the obligatory Liquid Wrench or similar products around the distributor housing.
JimM Sep 5th, 07, 07:54 AM ouch, that's painfull...
I don't know what is left other than to pull the pan and oil pump, and beat it up from the bottom.

Be sure to use a Brass Punch for any type of "Forceful - Convincing Make That Thing Get Out of There " Removal.
hhott71 Sep 5th, 07, 08:26 AM remove engine,
set on engine stand oil pan up
remove oil pan and oil pump and oil pump drive shaft
Using a brass bar tap away at the DIST
Stainless dog Sep 5th, 07, 08:53 AM You might try tig welding a tee handle on top of the shaft to have something to tap against but if it comes out without the gear;your left with coming from bottom like jim said.
softail02 Sep 5th, 07, 09:51 AM did you remove the Cam ?
68327camaro Sep 5th, 07, 11:09 AM no, cam is still in engine.
Steptoe Sep 5th, 07, 01:33 PM remove engine,
set on engine stand oil pan up
remove oil pan and oil pump and oil pump drive shaft
U are going to have to do that anyway, and most prob pull sumps. inlet etc etc
So do it out of the car, the lazy mans way....
77wolf10.85 Sep 5th, 07, 02:45 PM We just talked about oven cleaner on one of JimM's threads. It eats aluminum. Pack some grease around the shaft and some rags on the valley so it doesn't get in your oil system and hose it with Easy Off. Worth a try.
The slide hammer is a good idea, but the shaft has to be able to turn as it comes up. I would weld a plate on top of the shaft and find or build me a lever with a fork and a fulcrum setting in the vee and pry it up.
dnult Sep 5th, 07, 06:19 PM Can you put a wrench on the breaker point cam and give it a twist. I don't remember if its cw or ccw, but if it's meshed hard with the cam gear, I'd hope it would just twist on out if you turn it the right way. Then again, if it's bent it may not twist like it should. I wonder if the roll pin walked out on you and is binding on the cam gear.
zdld17 Sep 5th, 07, 07:41 PM Please , no flame, you may have fumes or fuel it self in pan, vapors, Boom, No Flame.
Did you say the lower portion of the dist sealing flange is still on manifold? If not , pull manifold and then you have something to work with when you can see remainder of housing in block.
If flange is still on manifold, is there any way you can get a large cowfoot wrench on that square base?? Is this a GM dist or aftermarket??
68327camaro Sep 6th, 07, 06:18 AM some more good ideas. the last of which i want to try (although may be my only recourse) is to pull the engine like was suggested.
