Can anyone tell me how much I should expect to pay to repaint a car another color? Is it common for body shops to paint a new color over the old different color.I have seen a car like that and was not really impressed.
I am looking for a 69 SS that is hugger orange with white stripes but have not found one.Depending on the cost of a paint job will
determine if I would buy a car that is a different color.Does annyone know of a good body shop in the Chicagoland area?Thank you for any help you can give me.

How much are you looking to spend on the car?
If the car your looking at is a real SS then you don't want to paint it another color. A price on a paint job depends on how much work needs to be done.
There is a hugger orange '69 in my town for sale for around $10,000. If you want the # let me know.

Well that all depends on what you want and what you want to spend. When it comes to paint and body, you really do get what you pay for. For a decent paint job and some body work, look to spend on up to $5k and more.

There's a guy here that has a shop and 25+ years experience that told me he'd remove interior, windshield, trim, rubber, strip my car down to bare metal, and do it all for $1,800. He uses a PPG paint system and offers a lifetime guarantee. The hitch is that he said he'd want the car for about a month. That sounds pretty good to me, but just the same, I'm going to get some more estimates. I'll ask each shop why they are better than the others and see what they have to offer.

More importantly than the cost is the quality of work. $1800 is great if it comes out looking great. $1800 sucks if it comes out like crap. The best thing to do is go to a car show or the next time you see a nice car ask the person where or who painted it. Telling someone that you think they have a nice paint job and would like the same will make them more than happy to talk to you about it. Who knows they might even be a painter. Cost is important but so is quality. $1800 isn't bad especially if he does what he says but have you seen any of his work and talked to anyone that has a car that he painted? Are his customers happy with him?

Dadjad, I'd be a little leary of that $1800.00 paint job. Have you seen any of his work at that price? I've been looking around and getting estimates for several months now, and I haven't found anyone near that inexpensive........other than MAACO!

Hey Guys,

My business is Industrial Painting. Regardless of what it is being painted (house, car, power plant)you WILL get what you pay for with a reputable contractor/ shop.

I am disgusted by some clients who care nothing about the paint job except how low the price can go. When they find their "price" and give that contractor the job, they are usually very disappointed with the results. http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif

I know painting contractors who will do anything to cut corners on their jobs (even skipping surface prep, painting over dirt & grease etc.)just so they can make a buck off their "cheap" price. http://www.camaros.net/forum/eek.gif

To get off my soapbox now, the point is Ask Questions (what type of surface prep/ bodywork is included, what quality paint/ #coats used etc.), Get References (check them and look at their work!), get more than one price (at least 3) but make sure the context is the same for all (same prep, bodywork, type paint, warranty etc.) and never take the lowest bid (unless there are superior references!)! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

The price is up to you! How much can you afford to spend? Just my 2 Cents worth...

No offense ragtopman..

As I posted in Bench Racing.

Your bodyman says....

6-8 weeks"
Meaning = 6-8 months.

"$1,500 - $2,000"
Meaning = $4,000 - $6,000

"It's almost done"
Meaning = It just got primered.

"We'll be very careful and mask for overspray"
Meaning = Your engine and frame will match your body color.

"We'll be very carfull with your car"
Meaning = You better put in a new rev limiter chip.

And on and on and on.....

All I can say about paint is this. I cuurently have my 69 in the shop now for paint and to replace one fender (I supplied the fender) and the cost for this job will be in excess of $10,000.00. The car is being taken down to bare metal, it will be blocked at least three times, and then painted the SAME color it was.

Expensive???? Yes BUT IMO this guy is the best and I am willing to pay for it. He KNOWS he is the best and he KNOWS that I know he is the best. He has more work than he can do and he is willing to do mine now so that's that.

I will say that you guys on the west coast have a much greater supply of great painters so I probably could get this same job done for 6-8,000 there.

Realistically, if you are not looking for a show quality job, I would say 4,500-5,500 dollars would get you a great "DRIVER" quality paint job that you would be happy with BUT I'm not sure whether that would include taking the car down to bare metal.

This pricing I'm throwing out here pertains to the Dallas Ft. worth area. I'm sure it it's different in your area.

GHEATLY down here is also getting his car painted and maybe he will jump in here and share with you his experiences with cost shopping for paint.

I guess I'm lucky I am in an auto body class at a local technical school. I have painted 2 cars with a little help from my teacher. I thought the looked really good and my teacher said the were about $5,000 paint jobs if some one else did it. Now I'm working on my own Camaro and I have all the body work done and the car is primed. I have saved so much money by doing it my self and it is done right because I am under the supervision of a pro that has been doing this his whole life. It will cost about $700
for paint and primer for a $7,000 paint job. My car is getting a little extra prep work and extra color sanding and buffing. Any way just seeing how much a good paint job cost makes me thankfull for being able to work on my own car. Sorry this is kinda off topic but its late and I'm excited about making progress on the old Camaro.

Actually, I have seen his work - on my wifes car, and I think it looks great!! This guy has a long wait of cars and I've seen plenty of his finished product and, well, I'm no show car judge, but I was impressed. Like I said, he has 25+ years experience, uses PPG piant systems, pulls everything off the car and takes it to bare metal. $1,800

IMO, $10,000 is a little pricey for a paint job. I'd be afraid to drive the thing and I'd rather burn in hell than own a trailer queen that I'd have to push up some ramp to get from here to there. Where's the fun in that? Sitting in the car while its on the trailer while someone hauls you around just so you can feel the wind in your hair? Sorry, not for me. But, like so many other posts, I gotta say: "To each their own"

Whoever says "you get what you pay for" was probably burned on a bad decision they made and their still a little tender. I believe you can get quality work at great prices. Just ask what they offer, check with your friends here, get as much information as you can, and make a decision based on your available funds. Good luck!

If he does all that and you like his work, don't waste any time looking for a better deal!! I have painted three of my own cars; the amount of time involved is enormous. Just to pull off everything and strip the car to bare metal is worth a lot. After 30+ hours of sanding, priming, blocking, etc. you're ready to paint. This is on a car with no bodywork. At a cost of $500-$800 for primer, paint, clear, reducer, catalyst, etc. and a full day of spraying you're now ready for 2-4 days of wet-sanding and buffing. Then you get to re-assemble the car. We're not talking Maaco here, but a very nice paint job. I can see $5000- $10,000 and more. There is a TON involved in a real nice paint job. If this guy does all you say and you like his work there is no decision....jump on it!!!!!!!!!!! He's practically working for free!!

In general you do get what you pay for, BUT there are some shops that give you More than you pay for, just for positive word of mouth. My boss will give some really good deals to people that he feels will get him positve references in the future. The main thing to do is make sure you have seen some work done by this shop.
BTW there are also some bodymen/painters that do some work on the side, and charege much less. That doesn't mean the quality is any less than a large shop they just don't have the overhead of a large shop.
CarlC I understand where your coming from, but personally the quote I give before I start work doesn't change. Remember though everytime you enter that shop and say "While your at it" YOUR changing the price.
SMICK6 What PPG line does he use? PPG has many lines of paint in high/low cost and quality.

DADJAD,

I COMPLETELY agree on the Trailer Queen comment. I drive my car every day BUT I want it to be as nice as one can possibly make it even to the extent that I am willing to put show quality components and paint on the car.

And if it gets wrecked or damaged, what the hell, I will just put it back together nicer than before. That's why I pay for insurance!!!

I KNOW I am in the minority on this because it sounds excessive but haven't you ever had the desire to drive that perfectly prepared Z-28 or SS TRAILER QUEEN show car??? IMO these cars are not trophies to be put up on the shelf and admired, they are to be driven on the road where many more people can enjoy and appreciate them.

And that's where mine is going to be on the road every day, on cruises, on Hot Rod Power Tours etc. That's the way it should be.

By the way, DADJAD, I would immediately get my car down there to your 1,800 guy before he changes his mind. This may be the deal of the century!!!

sr71bb, Glad to hear your car is still going to be driven. I bet she's going to look incredible when it's all done.

As for wanting to drive one of those trailer queens - I'll say this - they just better never leave the keys in 'em! http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

I wish I could find a good paint guy willing to do my '68 for $1800. All the quotes here in the San Jose area so far have been upwards of $5000 for a total colour change with only minimal bodywork.
I f he's as good as you say i'd jump at the offer.
Good luck.
