I am going to look at the 1969 Camaro below on Sat in person. Price is 26,900. From what I know about the car so far and from decoding the VIN etc.., the car looks clean from the pics but they list it as an SS (X11) car but there is no documentation and the X11 code was available with base cars too so I am thinking this is a clone. Not the original engine or rear and not sure about the trans but I doubt it. Not original paint and no info on what year it was painted, but looks in decent shape with mirror scratches and wear. The 454 is out of a 1975 Chevelle rated at 215 hp and the mileage is unknown also. I asked about rust and they said there is "minor" rust on the drivers side floor pan and maybe the right rear quarter. Other small stuff like the door locks don't work, choke is not connected etc.. I haven't seen it in person yet, but wanted to get an idea of what you guys would pay for this car. It seems high to me and according to the NADA guide the price is more in line with a real SS in avg. shape, but again, I am just starting out shopping for a Camaro and wanted to get an idea of what you think its worth before I go. Below is a link to the car, thanks for the help

Based on the ad and your description I wouldn't even waste my time with that car...NOM-Supposed SS with a 454 that only has 215 HP????

The car also has some rust issues....for that money there should be no rust issues whatsoever!.....I am sure there is hidden rust as well....there always is when there is visible rust!

Without documentation or the original drivetrain it should be viewed as a base model and pricing should reflect that....IMO, that car is worth somewhere between $16 & $19 K

What exactly are you looking for....maybe a TC'er can steer you towards one they know about.

Date codes matching with the 12 bolt unless someone has gone to some trouble to get the right dated one might help. As for the rust. If they are telling you it has some, then look for more!! If you don't know much about Camaros get some that does. We have people here that most likely live near you and don't mind helping out for some gas money, lunch and maybe a cold beer.

Start another thread loking for people in your area to help you out with this purchace if you need it.

Depends on what you're looking for. You'd be doing more than a little work on that car, so I'd pass unless it was in the price range that Dan mentioned. Low hp 454? You might be dissatisfied w/the engine. As already stated, body has issues. And look at the interior pic-headliner ruined, seats bad...things like the rust on the shoulder belt chrome make me wonder if the car was sittting for years, then painted over a rusty car?? That car is way overpriced, in my opinion...I'm looking for a first gen also, but every time I go see one for sale by a dealer it's the same story...I do think it makes sense to try to find a car from a private seller, who has cared for the car, maybe a TC member or someone one of us knows that has one for sale in your area...do you watch Craigslist for camaros?

I would be very careful, and definately bring someone who knows Camaro's (if you don't.) It concerns me that they state "tag reads" this makes me suspicious that it may not be the tag that came with the car. It concerns me that there are no close up pics of the exterior...all shots are from 10'-20'.

The first paragraph of the description seems deceiving to me, this seems like the Chevrolet hype about the new '69 Camaro when it was released in '69....I don't think it is descriptive of the car they are picturing. It leads you to believe that "this" car has all new sheet metal except for the hood and trunk when in fact it is GM telling the differences between the '67-'68 and the '69 when it was released. JMO, maybe I'm way off base here, but I wouldn't waste my time looking at this one. The ratty headliner and rusted seatbelt buckle are easy fixes, but not replaced. What about the things that are not obvious? Way, way overpriced IMHO.

Thanks for all the reples.

So I guess I was on th right track. I thought it was overpriced too. I am going to go take a look at it tomorrow, but I am not going to get my hopes up. I will be fully equipt with flash light, magnet to find filler, ?'s, etc. when I get there. I think I have a good understanding of cars and Camaros, but again I have never owned one so there is still alot to learn. And if or when I do find a car I am serious about I was planning on getting an inspection company like automotiveinspections.com to inspect it and provide a report for negotiating. Though now that I joined this site and realize that there are very knowledge people all around that might be willing to help look, I can go that rout too.

I am basically looking for a 1969 Camaro that is a nice clean well runnning driver that me and my son can use on weekends for cruises etc, then later on down the road start restoring (ProTourer) it when he is alittle older. My budget is not for a numbers matching or fully frame off resto, but I am hoping to find a nice well maintained driver.

Keep the opinions coming, I really appriciate everyones help. Gives me a better idea before I go. Any other leads on any 1969 Camaros are very welcome. I will give craigslist a try too. thanks again

PS. What is a "TC' er" Is it just a forum memeber or a paid memeber? Sorry new to this site!

I would have to agree that the car should be within $16,000-19,000 range...
Take a very close look at it.

I saw that ad and shrugged it off... too far away for me to inspect

Add another 10K at least on to what you pay for it for body work and paint, now your getting up there.

It's probably worth about 18-19k which is most likely what the dealer paid for it. Much better off dealing with a private party. For 26k I'd expect much much better.
