: Mixed emotion-New best but lost oil pressure

Went to test n tune...2 passes then noticed my oil pressure was really low (5-7 psi) at idle, then up to about 23 psi around 2500 rpm. Normally it is around 25 at idle and 55 psi at 2500 rpm. Car runs/sounds fine, the oil is clean and properly filled.

Looking for some troubleshooting help.
1. This is an Autometer electric oil press gauge. So my first thought would be to get a mech gauge and see what it reads.
2. If that fails, I was thinking simplest (wishful thinking) thing would be that the oil filter had imploded or something and was causing a restriction...not likely but, easier than next step...
3. Pull engine, drop pan, check oil pump to see if loose, cracked, etc...
4. If not, then replace oil pump.

Any more suggestions?...I put the engine in the car, but how the oil works it's way around the engine after the pump is mildly mysterious to me...

The GOOD News, this was my second time to a test n tune with this engine...I picked up a 1/2 second from visit a year ago...just by tuning the carb from out of the box settings! Plus it was 94 degrees out, and I had just driven 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to the track.

Although it was just a t-n-t, I was matched against a Ford Lightening which I beat nicely...
To my kids, I was a HERO! They declared me the fastest car there...:D
At the last t-n-t I kept getting matched against full-on dragsters and my kids have been telling all the neighbor kids that "our DAD is slow"...or from my 4 year old, "Maybe they can line you up against the golf cart guy next time..." :P

Thanks as always,
Scott

If the engine sounds fine my bet would be the gage. I think your first step is the right place to start looking.

they always run best just before they blow, check the pressure with a manual gauge screwed directly into the line fitting.

Mount a manual gauge somewhere. Never trusted those electric psi transducers.

Sorry to hear about the oil pressure But I would check the first 2 first... I really hope you're not running a fram filter, if so that would be my bet.

Didn't hook well? I thought the ZZ454 would get you easily into the 11s....

I don't know much about drag racing...I thought the 60' times were decent though, but to be honest I have no idea what "good" times are or aren't...
1. I totally messed up the burnout thing I think...I only let em spin for a quick second...didn't smoke em. Some guys really roasted em...some didn't. I don't know the theory very well. My first pass, I was the 5th guy down the track and I didn't spin too much...My second pass (same lame burnout) I spun the tires badly on launch.
2. My first pass, I drove clean through the staging lights :clonk: At least I remembered someone once telling me not to backup until they signalled you...not sure if that a universal rule or only at some tracks. They definitely gave me the "idiot-eye", but I didn't get booted
3. I gotta figure out how to use two feet. I just used one foot and went from brake to gas on the last yellow. I think I coulda done better if I had done more than just 2 runs...

Even with my clumsy technique, I don't think I'm gonna see 11's on this combo. Not sure what effect slicks and skinny tires would have though...

I thought mid 12's after an hour drive in full street trim was pretty good. Maybe if I get brave, I'll try the transbrake next time...I'm pretty sure I'd blow away the tires though... :noway:

On my second run, I ran a 12.69...When I popped my hood in the staging lane afterward, the #2 plug wire was dangling loose

Anyways...it was fun!

Scott, what tires are you running on the rear ?

Burnout for slicks or drag radials... I heat the tires till i see smoke in the rearveiw, let off the brake, and roll out spinning feeling for it to hook as I let off the gas. Stage (no dry hops) and watch the lights. After both cars have both stage lights on their side light, bring the RPM's up to your launch RPM's. Last yellow let off the brake at the same time you nail the gas. I know this is a quick over view but you get the idea.
