You would have to take the fender off.

You do not have to take the fender off. You do not have to take the motor out. You can get the inner fender/ wheel well out from underneath. There is an ongoing disagreemnt about this if you look up posts on replacing the heater core or fan. I know it can be done because I have done it twice (both 1969 and both without AC). I never did it on an AC car so I am not sure about them.

What about the radiator core support? Or on a RS, the hide-away headlights?

I replaced an inner fender with the reg fender on the car. It can be done but it's easier to remove them as a unit because of the need to get the inner fender inside the wheel well lip on the outer fender. The shop manual recommends doing them as a unit, also.

I had the car jacked pretty high and dropped the back end of the inner fender first. The radiator support was not a problem. I had a 69 RS with AC but never tried it on that car. If I remember correctly the headlight door arms would be a problem but wouldn't you have to disassemble them no matter how you do it? The fender lip was a problem but I used some plastic "spoons" I have for rubber molding. I did it all in 1 day start to finish including dealing with some rusty bolts. The best part is I did not have to align the fender or hood or deal with shims. No scratched paint either.

This is a pretty old thread, so wanted to see if others have had success in installing inner fenders without taking the fender off. I painted the car with the together (minus the inner fenders) and really don't want to take the feners off if I can help it. I spent 5-10 minutes w/ the front end jacked up looking for an easy way to slide the inner fender in. Anyone done this lately?

No problem....just take your time so you dont scratch up the inner fender wells. you must remove the fender extensions too, as the wells are bolted to the fenders and the extensions.you can leave the lower valence and grill in place too !!!

Thanks. I was able to get them in after removing the fender extensions and lower valence, and a little encouragement w/ a straight srewdriver.
