Well today we put in a Mopar Crate 360 sb in a buddies 73 Challenger. Its the 390Hp/420TQ model.
Per the instructions it call for 34-36 total timing all in at 2800, But....they say they want these specs WITH the vaccum advance hooked up. That puts the initail at like 0 at idle...I dont get it. What do you guys think???
I figured it would want something like 16-18 initail.....34-36 total with the vaccum advance disconnected. Then 50 or so at cruise with the vac connected......
Here is the specs on the motor...
360cid
9 to 1 comp
hyd roller cam...288/292......230/234.....507/513......110
Magnum RT heads....flow 229cfm
M1 single plane
Holley 650DP
1 5/8" long tubes
2 1/4" dual exhaust X pipe 40 series flows

Nothing to lose, try it both ways and use the best results. You can always go back to the manf specs.

I'd say you're right, the instructions are wrong.

Was the distributor part of the crate engine? If not it's curve may not be to Mopar spec's. If it did come with the engine I'd try it as suggested, you can always change it. Also call the place it came from and ask them about the instructions if it doesn't run well at their recomendations. Combustion chamber can change a lot and since it's not a sbc it may not like the same timing.

Well..I called Mopar performance and guess what...he said their instructions were wrong! He said do it just the way I had said. Would be nice to update their instructions to how to set it up right...jeez

if you still have a problem where it runs like crap from take off and run good afterwards send dizzy out and get recurved. i went through that with that same motor from chrysler.or you can try yourself and put in heavier springs. most fly out to quick.

Well we got the timing set up properly now and it runs like a champ. We did swap the worn out/beat down 650 out for a new Holley 770 street avenger. Down the road I think we will pull the M1 single plane off and swap on the Edelbrock RPM air gap magnum. The car is pretty heavy and with a mild converter so I think the dual plane would really wake the motor up down in the low/mid range.

This has been a test.
All who admitted to working on Mopars in this string will be contacted shortly by the General and have their Chevy Man club cards revoked.
Sorry...couldn't resist....I'll even admit to being a closet Challenger/Cuda fan.
Almost bought one of the 6 pack 70' Challengers for $4K when I was 16, but dad thought it looked to "racey". So after passing on a 69 Pontiac Trans Am next and for the same reason, I bought my first 68 Camaro instead....totaled it 3 months later, so God saved those first two gems from a certain and early death.
Been a Camaro man ever since.

It's o.k., I like the old Mopars, even a '65 2 door Belvedere with bigs n littles on em.
Cuda, Challenger, certain Chargers, and the V8 Darts are cool.
Did I post this out loud? :D
Whats that old saying?
